After the 2009 specials. Season 5 in 2010 will have a new Doctor.

I'm both sad and excited. He was awesome.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/3282197/Favourites-for-next-Doctor-Who-emerge.html

My pick:

He was awesome as a very doctor-like character (in some ways) in Neverwhere, he's hilarious and sharp in Peep Show, and he'll make a fantastic doctor. Awesome black president + awesome black doctor = a very fun couple of years.

^^ Awesome, but too old. Rumors he may play Rassilon, though. Since he just did Hamlet with Tennant, they're buds now.

To describe it in any real detail would be pointless, but it's a British show bout a traveler who can move through time and space. He's not from earth, though he looks like a man, and David Tennant was the 10th (depending on who you ask) person to play the role since it started in the 60s. The movement from one Doctor to another is explained by the fact that Timelords (people from The Doctor's planet) regenerate rather than die.

The show went off the air in the 80s but came back in 2005.

Oh, and it's the best Science Fiction television show ever.

I'm sad, but not too surprised. Tennant is a great Doctor, one of the best. I'm really interested to see the next regeneration, because it will be some big shoes to fill. Patterson Joseph would be an interesting choice.

In my opinion, this should be getting more press; I think it's being overshadowed by the shitstorm around Russell Brand over in the UK.

Oh, and the Christmas special airs (in the UK, of course) on Christmas day at 6pm GMT. That's become mine and my brother's favorite Christmas tradition - staying up late and watching The Doctor

BBC News has announced that the identity of the actor who will play the Eleventh Doctor, succeeding current Doctor David Tennant, will be announced tomorrow.

The news will come in a special edition of tie-in documentary series Doctor Who Confidential, which is being transmitted on BBC One tomorrow evening at 5.35pm. The episode will also be shown at the same time on BBC Big Screens in town centres across the UK.

The actor was confirmed in the role over the Christmas period and will begin filming for Series Five this summer, for transmission in 2010. New executive producer Piers Wenger is quoted as saying: "We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own. I just can't wait to tell everyone who it is - it has been a nail-biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!"

The release from the BBC Press Office confirms that the Confidential episode has been retitled "The Eleventh Doctor" (it was formerly advertised as "The Ten Doctors"), and will feature the actor concerned giving his or her thoughts on having been cast. The press release also suggests that the last of David Tennant's episodes as the Doctor will be broadcast in the New Year of 2010.

The BBC have created a special trailer for the Doctor Who Confidential episode, which is also available to British internet users on their official YouTube page.

I just don't know if I'll be able to get into a new Doctor. I thought David Tennant was brilliant! The new actor they are bringing in has some big shoes to fill.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2009/01_january/03/who.shtml

Quote :
"The BBC today announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who.

Smith will be the 11th Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves the show at the end of 2009. He will be seen in the forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010.

The fifth series will also have a new lead writer and Executive Producer in the form of the BAFTA award-winning writer Steven Moffat, who is taking over from Russell T Davies.

Moffat will be joined by Piers Wenger, who will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales making the show.

Following David Tennant's decision to step down at the end of 2009, the team behind the new series set about casting the new Doctor so that new adventures could be created and scripts written with Matt in mind.

The identity of the new Doctor was revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential that was broadcast on BBC One today (3 January) at 5.35pm (17.35 GMT)."

Constovich - the limit was actually 13, but that was mentioned some 30 years ago and never really brought up again. Several other characters have been given extra regenerations, and the theory in the geek world was that The Timelords (The Doctor's people) actually imposed that limit themselves. Since they are gone now, and The Doctor is "The Last Timelord," he isn't quite that limited. Either way, the show will deal with it somehow I'm sure when we get there, but that's years from now since Doc 11 doesn't even start until 2010.

Sorry you asked now?

I wouldn't really call this guy pretty. He has a fivehead and is kind of weird looking...
Which I like for The Doctor. The weird looking part, at least.

yeah, i'd say this guy epitomizes the ugly european. however, the look does seem to suit the doctor so i'll remain optimistic for now. i'm just glad tennant has one more season left. also, has anyone seen anything with this guy in it? his imdb resume isn't very impressive

I'm downloading Ruby in the Smoke now, and I've heard party animals was really good. Haven't seen them, though. Funny enough, he's starred opposite Billie Piper (Rose) 3 times.

Anyway, I was hoping for Paterson Joseph, who is black. Who cares if he's black? There are black timelords and lady timelords, and the doctor's hair, eyes, accent, height, weight, and age has changed every time he's regenerated. No reason whatsoever that he couldn't become black or even a woman, or hell, even non-humanoid, if he wanted.

Ah. Well, alot of people really were very upset at the idea, but nobody could give a better reason than "the doctor's always been white and male," which hardly suffices.

Except that that's what Timelords look like, humans. They're always identical on the exterior to humans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regeneration_(Doctor_Who)#Romana.27s_regeneration

Quote :
"Romana's tongue-in-cheek regeneration scene in Destiny of the Daleks contrasts markedly with the Doctor's transformations. In the first episode of the serial, Romana undergoes regeneration, in the process trying out several different forms (not all recognizably human) before choosing to adopt the appearance of Princess Astra, a character she encountered in a previous adventure (The Armageddon Factor)."

Plus, it's a scifi show... and it's Doctor Who. If he decided to regenerate into a green short guy, they'd blow it off with one line of explanation and move on.

Well, there's no season, just specials - the ones I listed. Basically, there are 4 or 5 hours of Tennant left. No definite word on when they're airing here, but they will be in HD! I usually download them and watch as soon as they've aired in the UK.

it'll be everywhere. Torrents, youtube, etc.

It'll be the first Who ever in HD, though, so I'd recommend downloading the HD torrent.
