i've had great results from each, but TNF quality has been shitty for a while. it blows.

Personally, I've had my Northface fleece jacket for 6 years and I wear it everytime I ski and it's not insanely cold... still going strong and keeping my warm/dry...

One of my BASE jumping buddies is one of the top marketing gurus for North Face. We were out tracking positive walls in the Swiss alps about a month ago. He is cool as hell and they even promote more fringe outdoor activities, like BASE jumping. Let me know if you were doing anything more intense than that.

spending 2 weeks in the amazon collecting research data? week-at-a-time trips in the andes? 4 weeks in the arctic? i'm sorry, i can't help it...i've had my hands on a tranquilized brown BEAR, pumping stomach content...it's just not the same as SKIING

and no, i'm not saying that i was wearing the same jacket in all cases...what i am saying is that while north face might be okay for someone whose most extreme sport is skiing, i've had more problems with their shoddy products (WELL outside the tolerance for normal wear-and-tear, and hella outside the tolerance for that much money) than with any other "nice" product line

YMMV...if you want to pretend like north face isn't a fashion statement, that's cool by me...and maybe their products have improved in the past few years, as i haven't bought something north face (that wasn't drastically on sale, and those pants were absolute CRAP compared to my REI brand, which was astounding) for 4-5 years

the problem is that you can't compare different activities very well...most skiing, while i understand that you might fall and come into contact with snow, is not the same as traipsing through a rain forest where there is no trail and having your jacket brush up against branches and stuff all the time...nor is it the same as rappelling down a cliff face formed by glacial melt in the arctic, where you might be brushing up against rock all the time...i'm not especially hardcore, but i'll bet money i've done a hell of a lot more in 2 years than this chick will do in her entire life, and FOR THE MONEY, north face just doesn't cut it...i'm sure it's great for a sorority chick

also, it's okay, BobbyDigital...you don't like me, and i think you're kind of a pompous dick at times, too...i don't mind if you pretend like i'm a liar...you can see some of my pictures in the DSLR thread if you don't believe it, and if you STILL think i'm lying, i'll ask my old professor and some of my old research associates if they have any of their own (it's kind of hard to take pictures of myself, you know?)

way to go with BobbyDigital on this one and take my statement to the extreme...i really AM sorry to hear that you think that spending weeks at a time in the middle of a rain forest or the arctic, with little or no outside contact for extended amounts of time to be less "intense" than skiing...but realize that i'm not here to have a pissing contest with you or your friend who base jumps...i know i use my products more than most people who purchase north face, and i know that my experience has taught me that, for the money, NF sucks donkey balls...let me know what you're doing with your apparel and we'll compare notes?

also, high end jackets for base jumping? you're FALLING, what kind of jacket do you need?? maybe the HIKING you do to get to the top of whatever you're jumping off of, but thats hiking, not BASE jumping

rainforest...you get soaked, and half the time it's like it's just a mist that won't go away (the andes were mostly like this, due to the altitude)...having a thin, waterproof jacket that is also breathable AND will hold up against physical abuse is key

that type of quality isn't cheap (nor would i expect it to be)

^^ you'd be surprised how a good jacket will keep you dryer by keeping the rain out and reduce sweat with good venting

though i've yet to find anything that doesn't feel hot when you've got a full pack on your back

On a related note, I tore my Marmot trying to fix the subwoofer on my boat. It got caught on a piece of unsanded fiberglass and ripped right open. I didn't even end up with a good scar to show off for it.

marmot is the heat (i have two). plus i have a nice mammut ice climbing hoodie that is reallly warm. imho north face makes a decent product, but similar to burton for snowboarding you are paying extra for that name recognition.
