The definitions of liberal and conservative have flip-flopped too, so it's a little hard to say exactly, depending on what definition you're using.They're both pretty much very pro-government now, though.

when Lyndon Johnson helped move Civil Rights legislation through the congress, and then signed the Act in 1964, he reportedly remarked that the Democratic Party had just lost the South for a generation.he would be wrong of course, they lost it for longer than that.but i think that's pretty much the point of no return for the Republican / Democrat shift

Do some research into the Wilmington Race Riots of 1896, heck just wikipedia it and you will learn a lot about republicans and democrats and the history of why we are where we are today regarding that time in NC history.
