I got in an argument with my uncle, and Obama supporter, over this. He kept telling me I had to vote for one of the two main candidates or I'd be throwing my vote away. I've reached the point though, that voting something other than my conscience is throwing my vote away.

The biggest long term problem facing the United States is the impending fiscal insolvency of the government. Not the economy or Iraq or health care. The solution of both of the primary parties is to spend more money and hope the problem goes away.

A two party system gives too much power to the extremes of each party. Even a moderately powerful but 3rd place third party could drag the debate out of the Republican / Democrat dichotomy we're stuck in.

Where else is a small-government, non-interventionist, pro-civil rights, agnostic supposed to go anyway?

I think it is a mistake to assume that a third party's inability to win the presidency should be the mark by which we judge their success. An effective third party, even a small group, in congress or in state legislatures would be a step in the right direction.

NO. A republican congress took over in 1994 and that marked the decline of the budget. The budget wasn't actually balanced anyway. It was declared balanced on the back of Social Security revenue which couldn't be diverted to the budget anyway.

The Democratic party as a whole is a big fan of government programs, higher taxes, and more restrictions on my liberties. Both parties supported the Patriot Act, both parties supported the initial action into Iraq.

I'm just glad people decided to vote for someone, regardless. However, the people that I know who voted for a third party candidate aren't actually aligned with the candidate to begin with, but rather feel like being "different" with their vote. It's their right and it's better than not voting, but if you dig deep into their ideologies and stances on policies, I'd be willing to bet they aren't as aligned with the candidate as they would lead you to believe.
