if Obama's plans go through, you won't be able to get out of poverty for sure. change is all anybody will have left unless they are lucky enough to get one of his handouts.

most welfare-type programs are designed to alleviate immediate poverty, not for "pulling yourself out"

he's not poor. he's got too much money, so he's starting a foundation to help people who are poor.

I would start a non-profit to get people a college education. Depending on how much you raise and your success rate, you can get people from an Associate's to a Master's.

because programs like welfare aren't actually designed to get anyone out of poverty. they just enable a person to survive in poverty.

and because you have to be literally dirt poor to even qualify for programs like welfare. you can be a "low income" family and still be WELL above the poverty level, but be living in conditions a reasonable person would consider to be "poverty". i mean poverty extends far beyond the federal definition of poverty.

i also think education plays a big role (or lack of education). and your family support system. i mean i know i'll never be homeless on the streets because my family would come bail me out. what happens if your family is in the same situation? or you have no family? homeless shelters are full and have to turn people away. how easy do you think it is to get a job if you are homeless? where do they call? where do you shower? what clothes do you wear? how do you get to work?

Well for homeless people, it depends on the level of homelessness and who you have with you. If we're talking the people that live under bridges, out of their cars, or in college libraries, there is very little one can do to acclimate themselves to higher society, except by going through the emotionally painstaking government assistance programs or churches or "Safe Havens".

So the next step would be the people that live in homeless shelters. If one gets a job while living in the homeless shelter, he or she can very well lift themselves out of that state and into an apartment, but usually by sacrificing more than most people want to. It comes down to the choice of eating millet and eventually moving out (but not knowing when) or eating relatively decent (Hamburger Helper), but staying in the shelter (knowing where you will be). Shelters are also known for being breeding grounds for crime. It quickly becomes a negative feedback loop.

As for single moms, it varies. Some moms become "welfare queens". Other mothers don't work or don't work enough. Still others just keep popping babies. My own mother works an astounding ten hour work week (because Arby's keeps cutting her hours) and spends her meager earnings on booze and occasionally food.

There is a high investment cost to regaining one's self worth. It can take weeks, months, or even years to readjust emotionally, psychologically, and physically after living off of less than the bare essentials. A lot of people don't have the heart to get out of such endeavors. The sad thing is that all it takes is a little desire.

and for the people that do work and are trying to make ends meet the system isn't as easy as everyone likes to think. the large majority of people that find themselves in these awful situations are NOT college educated and may not have completed high school. they don't know when they're being taken advantage of. they don't know where to find resources. they can't just take out their iphones and google "homeless shelters."

people make mistakes. but most of us make dumb mistakes. but think about a dumb mistake that college kids might make, like charging to much on a credit card and then your parents paying it off and you paying your parents back and getting lectured and blah blah. the same situation for someone else, a family, etc, could be completely debilitating. yes, it is stupid. but that is easy for us to say as we are sitting in a much different position as educated people with resources.
