and star slides basically convert horizontal speed into verticle speed, tail slides give you extreame horizontal speed if you jump out of them quickly.. then you star slide your way up higher and higher..

i like to build a lot of horizontal speed before jumping to the point where the water looks like its frozen, then do a couple of jumps and on my final one or two tail slide to get horizontal speed and star slide up
