Step 2: Never get a reply of any sort.

THIS IS TRUE!

Every job interview I ever had (all 4 of 'em ) I got through personal contacts or getting someone on the phone. Just sending in resumes online seems to be hit and miss with a lot misses.

Applying for a job online is only useful if you plan on going to the employeer in person. It makes it easier on the hiring manager to put a face with a name.

^How'd we go from an SNL reference to Journey?

The job I have now I got from online resume submission. However it took about 6-8 months (can't recall exactly) for them to get in touch with me, and I was also helped out from a friend that worked in the company that put in a good word for me.

Now the previous two jobs I had before that I didn't apply via some fancy online system. Rather I emailed a cover letter and resume directly to the man in charge.

Applying online sucks, but that's why you just send out a barrage of resumes, assuming that only about 1 in 8 or so will even get a response.

I got my current job through online applications. You have to use tons of different sites and you'll probably only have about a 10% response rate for any entry-level or even low-mid level jobs. The key is to follow up with ANY that contact you back or leave phone numbers. Make sure you take note of what the position you were applying for was exactly, otherwise you may get confused with other applications you've put out. And you better be tailoring your cover letters, even if it's only small changes, you need to make them to make the hiring manager think you care about the job.

I have been using read/delivery receipts like a motherfucker. That way you get the name of the recruiter if it is not posted anywhere.
