The Event:

Quote :
"1:30 pm Saturday Nov 15th
NC State Capital Bldg.
1 E Morgan St, Raleigh, NC 27601"

Anyone can take part, just show up there and then.

The Website:
http://jointheimpact.com/
(Note that there are protests happening across the nation, including in other North Carolina locations like Charlotte, Greensboro, as well as the Equality NC conference occurring in Durham. Most of these events have their own facebook groups & events, as well as a national group & event, but the one I shared at the top of this thread is the most relevant to whats going on in Raleigh this weekend which is likely to be the main event in our state)

The Ad:

(This warrants its own thread so as to be extricated from a discussion in another thread that is far more focused on the fine points of California's laws & Constitution, and the process for amending & revising it, and what roles the courts are supposed to play.)

It might be just another protest that only gets a little attention and only advances the Marriage Equality cause just a few more steps (& if that is all it is, it's still worth it), but this might be a chance to be a part of living history in something that is written about in the civil rights sections of social studies and history text books years down the road. But there is only one chance to take part so click this link & find out more.

Yeah, the slaughter and real oppression of hundreds of thousands of people in the Sudan = the people of California voting to not allow gay marriage in their own state.

Protesting against genocide in Darfur is trying to get our government to help the situation. Protesting against Propostion 8 in NC is trying to..... you got me.

It's more than just a reaction to prop 8, although prop 8 is certainly a significant factor in that without CA there are very few options left for American gay couples to get married within their own country, but it is also intended as part of a larger movement.

Fine w/ me

Not like anything is going to change anytime soon, and as long as it happens after I'm dead I'm fine w/ that.

But on a serious non-sarcastic note...why post a shitty facebook event? Holler for grassroots? It's not even our fucking state. Hop on the gay band wagon folks wohoo.

I suspect this will end in violence and the police getting involved.

Because there are no groups more intolerant than those preaching tolerance.

A marriage is between a man and a woman and is a RELIGIOUS institution. A civil union can exist between same sex couples.

Why can't you have it where a civil union gets all the same rights and privileges, but happens outside of a church/synagogue/mosque's domain, and a marriage (which is a civil union) just happens in a church?

Why fight over a word?

"If we're going to fight over a word, my word is pussy."

^ if it is just a word, why do you care if the gays use it? Currently marriage is not just a religious ceremony, it is defined by the state, and the gays should have every right to call themselves married as long as the state is still in the business.

but atheists are allowed to get married. These days, marriage is a secular agreement that doesn't require church participation. and there are some churches that are willing to perform same sex marriage.

Make a civil union the state sanctioned union between 2 people. Then you can get married in a church if you want to, which would be a civil union, or you can enter into a civil union somewhere else. Let the church handle the marriages and the state the civil unions.

Easy.

Easy to say, but impossible to do. There just isn't a passionate and broad movement behind the idea of changing the government's wording to civil unions for all people. Taking the I'm against government being involved in marriage at all, OR the I'm against the government calling it marriage are nice in theory but both in practice come down to I'm going to let things stay the way they are.

Hey, Supplanter, since we're discussing protests here, are you going to do any of the following?

1. Protest the inauguration of Beverly Perdue as governor--you know, since she doesn't support gay marriage?

2. Protest the inauguration of Barack Obama as president--you know, since he doesn't support gay marriage?

3. Will you support protests in front of black churches--you know, like protestors did at Saddleback Church in California--since an estimated 70 percent voted against gay marriage?

70% of African Americans backed Prop. 8, exit poll finds

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2008/11/70-of-african-a.html

4. Will you condemn the despicable actions of these protestors in California who knocked a cross out of an old lady's hand and stomped on it simply because she dared to disagree with their Prop 8 position?

Better video--check about 2:38:

Yeah, I didn't think so.

I don't think most people "condemn" others who do not believe in same-sex marriage, but one of the reasons it makes me mad that gay people can't get "married" for whatever reason is that some of these people who are so loudly against same sex marriage are also out having affairs and making a mockery of the idea of a religious marriage. If you're going to be such a damned hypocrite, at least don't denounce other people for wanting to do something that you can't even do right.

My views on gay marriage are the same as my views on abortion, if I decide to get married to another woman or have an abortion, it does not hurt anyone and I don't really give a damn about someone else's moral views, especially when lots of people who claim to have "morals" are closet hypocrites.

Will I condemn the protesters taking the Yes on 8 woman’s sign. Yes, I’ll declare right here and now I think that was inappropriate, free speech is something I very much believe in. Will I organize multiple protests against several candidates who won office that were much better on gay rights than their republican counterparts? The obvious answer is no. Did I push many of the democratic campaigns I supported to be better on gays during the campaign season & occasionally successfully get them to change their websites or make public pro-gay rights statements or encourage them to take meeting with groups like the HRC, and call them out on it in public venues when I didn’t think they were going far enough? The answer is yes.

To answer your other question I’m protesting in front of government buildings and with enough media coverage hopefully in front of the people of North Carolina rather than against any churches. If there was any church that I’d be unhappy with it would be the members of Mormon church that funded and organized most of the Yes on 8 campaign, but all I can tell you is my personal reason for protesting isn’t against a church, it’s against intolerance & for marriage equality.

^awesome. I too will be bringing a car load.

We have nearly 700 confirmed guests on facebook + 900 maybes, adjusted for the reality of the way facebook events work and that's nearly 500 people likely to up from there alone.

Quote :
"But on a serious non-sarcastic note...why post a shitty facebook event?"

That is only one element of it. I did a press release to media outlets across the triangle and across the state on Monday, I've posted this on every left leaning blog & website I know of in the state, I went on the radio to talk about it today, and some of the other co-organizers are doing media interviews and appearances as well to raise awareness so I think we are reaching well beyond facebook.

Some additional info:
Quote :
"LOCATION:
Halifax Mall (Obama rally location), 46 East Lane St. between Wilmington and Salisbury Streets. Across from the NC Legislature building.

Parking is along the streets or a public lot at Wilmington and Jones Streets.

SPEAKERS:
Jim Neal, former NC candidate for U.S. Senate;

Jimmy Creech, former pastor who lost his position in the church after performing a civil union;

Sophia Bush, star of The CW Network’s "One Tree Hill"
"

And we rally across from the legislature building, I think we're going to march to the capital building.

There are some lgbt high school groups making extra signs for this event, but the only for sure way to have a sign to hold is to make your own.

Quote :
"Be creative with your signs! There will be special prizes awarded for the best sign and the person who shows up with the most friends and family!"

(prizes weren't my idea, but anything that gets a larger presence at this protest, the better)

I would say that it is possible, absolutely. Of course, if you are saying it is genetic, then that is, frankly, a moral claim, and we all know that we aren't supposed to legislate morality...

^ I'm not saying it's genetic, but it's clearly an innate, likely congenital, property.

And claiming something is genetic is not a "moral" claim, because typically when you say something is "genetic" it implies a specific meaning (because you can test and measure genetics).

And if you lack confidence in your own sexuality that you think you could flip sides, then you're either really bisexual or a closet gay (somewhere on the spectrum).
