when they can just cross over at the border crossings

i cant figure out why they run through the desert or pay to be smuggled when lots of them just drive across

no I mean the illegal way, passing through w/o any documentation in a convoy and the current border patrol staff on duty is in on it. To obtain a visa is a long wait several months and most of the time is turn down unless you have a good paying job or you are a student.
