i told my parents that they didn't need to get me a "santa" gift this year (the first time i've done this, lol) but they INSIST on doing it

so i'm thinking i'll buy the ps3 now and ask for an xbox 360 for christmas

you can install nix on the PS3 and try your hand at Cell programming.

PS3 can use bluetooth keyboards and mice to browse the internet.

PS3's controller is motion sensitive.

PS3 is backwards compatible with the vast majority of PS1 games and most PS2 games.

The PS3 has a great video decoder for Divx/Xvid movies streamed from your computer (3 different types of noise filters with 3 levels of adjustment each).

PS3 has a user replaceable hard drive, and a memory card reader.

The PS3's interface is not bloated with random advertisements like the Xbox's.

Little Big Planet is on the PS3 exclusively.

if blu-ray is even a small part of this decision, I'd highly recommend the PS3. Most games come out for both systems now anyway. Then there's the occasional LittleBigPlanet which is exclusive and incredible.

Post Halo 1 halo is overrated.

^^ the original 60GB one (that isn't made anymore) had hardware PS2 compatibility, and is the best revision of the PS3 to be made.

The new ones of all sizes only have software PS2 compatibility that does suck, but is still compatible with something like 85%+ of the games.

The PS1 compatibility is actually much better (and still software) with something like 95%+ compatibility.

Not any more. All the current models are stripped of the PS2 support (the 80 GB and the 160GB).

i'd get a 360 because my brother has one and I want to play games with him

if he didn't have one though, my dad's ps3 (yes my DAD has a ps3) impressed the fucking pants offa me. i think there's a way to do just about anything with it, and you don't have to "mod" it to get most of them, a lot of it is built in, plus there is their excellent customer support


also you get all grades of tv shows and movies in HD on the ps3.
there are a couple REALLY good anime shows produced specifically for the ps3

Huh?

Yes it is.

There was a revision of the 40GB PS3 that had no substantial PS2 compatibility, but all the current PS3s have PS2 compatibility that's more limited, but still there, than the original PS3 revision.

games really come down to preference, though i think the 360 lineup is a lot better.

that said (again preference), but i think 360 features are gonna trump.

1) 360 controller is probably the best console controller ever. the ps2 was among the worst of its generation and they still have it.

2) xbox live is just great. everything feels very well put together. i know the playstation online is getting a lot better, but you just cant touch xbox live. 50 bux a year is peanuts too.

I have one of the last versions of the 80gb PS3 that is backwards compatible with PS2 games, but I never bother to play it. The only thing I wanted to play from the PS2 genre was dance dance revolution, but the pads I have aren't cross compatible.

After you play a couple of PS3 video games in 1080P, you're not going to want to play your older PS2 games.

I'd highly recommend getting the PS3 for the blu-ray functionality if you enjoy watching movies. Also, I find the PS3 controller to be more comfortable than the 360 controller. It's lightweight and has built in rechargable batteries.
