granted I don't know The Roots very well outside of their drummer, but it seems weird that a successful band would want to be a house band on a tv show. don't the house bands play covers of other songs instead of their own material?

they play arrangements of other songs as well as what would be process music (if it wasn't a show with a live band) and skit intros/themes

i can see the roots doing some totally amazing arrangements of things that make the house band an active and engaging part of the show

and if they want to tour now and again, there's no problem finding competent musicians in nyc...the max weinberg 7 went on with another drummer when springsteen was touring
