WTF? Does he think that this is part of the reparation process, or me owing him? I couldn't help but mutter a "jesus fucking christ" when following him in, and made the whole confrontation awkward. Im not racist, but jesus. Am I missing something?

The morning after Obama was elected, I'm talking outside with a long-time coworker who is black.

After 5 minutes of shooting the shit, he turns and says, "Hey, you haven't congratulated me yet."

I said, "Oh, yeah? What did you do?" Expecting to hear his wife is pregnant, or he ran awesome numbers for the quarter or something.

He looked at me like I was an idiot, raised his arms kind of pointing at himself, with this "Duh" look saying "First black President, man!"

I said, in genuine seriousness, "You're the President?!?!"

He got my point. I love the guy, but I hope I made him feel as ridiculous as he deserved.

Idiots are found in every race, religion, and country.

It is just that when a member of a group that has traditionally been repressed/oppressed (or is a minority) achieves something important, a big chunk of the members of that group feel like they should be congratulated. And that's human nature. If the group is backwards in terms of scientific or leadership achievements, then the achievement of that one person is the only thing they can be proud of, and they take it very personally.

This is only one of many studies that have shown expectations significantly affect a student's performance. Obama's election is going to go a long way in changing the levels of expectations people have across the board, which in turn will increase levels of achievement, I predict.

- A fourth of my wife's department is planning on taking off work to drive to DC for inauguration day.
- A co-worker was sharing with me what he read from Judges 4 (from the bible) and how Obama is going to be like 'Barak' from the bible and give us victory over the Canaanites. It was an interesting discussion. We get into religious debates regularly, so it was nothing new.
