According to my Life magazine/book here....
On July 8, 1776 historians believe that the liberty bell was not rung to announce the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. At that time Independence Hall was in terrible shape and ringing of the bell was highly unlikely.
In 1847, the Saturday Currier published a "romanticized version of the events of July 8, which gave the tale the patina of truth."

Of course this is speculation....but it is interesting.

Isreal Bissell rode for 345 miles (over 4 days) alerting colonist along the way of the British attack. Comparatively Raul Revere's ride was really short. I guess Longfellow could not think of anything to rhyme Bissell with in his poem so he chose Revere (making his ride the historic one).

I don't understand why we lie to kids. Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, toothfairy... why? I guess one could say that it helps to instill a sense of wonder to the world, or perhaps to have fun, but ultimately it makes no sense.
