Maybe for a whole house, but if your just chillin' in one room, go with space heat.

Could someone provide some hard and worthy evidence that proves the efficiency different b/t a heat pump system and using a ceramic heater? (like an easily read link....i could write numbers and shit all day and not communicate with him)

My dad insists on turning the thermostat down for the entire house (fuel oil/central air) and running a 1500W ceramic heater in the living room for ~3-4hrs a day, not to mention that the control thermostat isn't too far away from the heater, giving a false reading for the entire house. I've argued that it is more cost effective, not to mention comfortable to turn the T-stat up a few degrees and spare the space heater.

anyone?

usually your utility company has an energy expert just waiting to unleash their plethora of knowledge on anyone that cares to listen. call them up and see if they have time to go over some of your issues.

that said, it is my understanding heat pumps >>>> space heaters. I think it's something like 1 joule to move 2-4 joules of heat vs 1 joule to generate 1 joule of heat. Obviously you can't fuck with the temperature though or the efficiency drops drastically, so set it at your temp and never change it or turn it off. The guy at GUC talked to me for close to an hour, but that's all I really remember from the conversation. I just took his word for it and our thermostat chills around 68 [no.pun]

CarZin has a bunch of energy advice in a lounge thread titled '400 dollar utility bill' or something similar. I'm sure he'll drop some knowledge bombs here if he reads it.
