Did anyone just see the "free kick" that the Cardinals just attempted?

The rule states that if you call for a fair catch on a punt or kickoff, you can attempt a FG from the spot of the catch.

The Cards just tried it....from 68 yards.

There was all of this drama and anticipation....

Rackers got the ball lined up just right....

paused and walked up to the holder to fix the hold again....

the crowd stands to their feet...

and Rackers gets the ball about 6 feet off the ground and kicks a worm burner to the 15 yard line.

HILARITY

say kicking team punts ball with time running out

if receiving team catches ball and runs and gets tackled...time runs out

if receiving team calls fair catch then they get another play

that's pretty weird - so you could theoretically punt and lose to a 70 yarder in the right conditions.

Also, if this happened, would that mean that field goal would be eligible for a record?

What were they doing that for? Just trying to set the record? Or...?

the odds of him making that with 5 seconds left are probably considerably higher than a hail mary being caught

points are points and would have benefited them at the end of the game really well actually.

I was telling my roommate about this last week and he was looking at me like I was retarded. Then this game came on the red zone channel.

I believe there is a rule similar to this in college?

Someone said up above that it had to be time running out? I don't think it does, and I think the college rule (or maybe I'm remembering from High School, that the punt has to be kicked from in the endzone?)

I knew you could get a free kick, but I thought it was a free contested field goal(snap, hold, linemen, etc.), not a setup like that.

Just weird.

This exists in college too, if you fair catch a punt w/ no time I believe the rule is that you get to run a play ... whether it be FG, or hail mary, etc. but might be wrong on that. 1 untimed down.
