I put mine in myself.

Do the the opposite of ^.
Lowes and HD contract installation out to the lowest, shoddiest contractors they can find.

If I remember correctly, my brother had hardwood floors installed in his house by a neighbor. He bought all the materials, ripped up the carpet, etc. and the guy just went through and installed the floor.

installing hardwoods is one of the easier "major" home upgrade you can do.
