What do you need your card to do?

List your top 5 games

and tell us a few that you're interested in in the near future.

well basically ive been out of gaming for a while

im still rockin my dell from 2001.

but can i play the new games with this (and possibly 2 of them with the sli)? the most intense shit i've even heard about recently was crysis, so i guess thats the benchmark for me.

also, it's mostly about being able to keep up reasonably for the near future...lately, i'm just limited on my comp because its so old and busted

i would say that's a good place to start, either that or the 9800GT or GTX+ depending on how much money you want to spend.

IF you're using a 2001 era Dell, that GPU and most good modern GPUs won't go in your computer.

First, make sure you have a PCIe x16 slot on your motherboard. If you're on a 2001 Dell you probably have an AGP slot (or even no video card slot -- worst case).

If you do have the necessary slot this 9800GT is a much better deal for $10 more:

I dont know my computers very well, so this is probably dumb but...

I just bought a new computer. Its graphics card is a "Intel Graphics Media accelerator 3100."

I have a grahics card I bought last year thats a e-GeForce 8600 GTS. Which is better? I am kind of assuming the Geforce card is, but the way computer technology moves year to year, I thought it might be possible that what the computer came with may be better.

Should I install the Geforce card in the new comp?

I just bought a 9800GT from Newegg. It was on sale for $100 AR last week. Should arrive today, I'll provide some feedback once it's up and running. Currently running a Quadro FX 3500 which is a killer card but isn't optimized for gaming, plus built on the 7000 series architecture so it's time to upgrade.

^^yes, 3100 is an integrated graphics on the motherboard, dedicated graphics card like the Geforce is always better.

^you'll notice a SIGNIFICANT difference in gaming for sure.

The 9800GT is sweet but the PSU I bought to go with it came DOA. Hopefully it will get here soon b/c I can't play for more than 5-10 minutes with the old one before a crash. Only 1 12V rail at 28A isn't enough juice. The new one has 4 12V rails so I can dedicate 20A to the card, should be enough based on what I've read.

But you were right, I can tell a huge difference over the FX 3500.

Follow-up: 9800GT plus new PSU = awesome

70-100 FPS in TF2 w/ everything on high, 4x AA and 4x AF
40-60 FPS in L4D w/ almost everything on high, 2x AA and 2x AF

Anandtech gave it some pretty good reviews
