I'm new to burning dvd's unfortunately and with my new system I thought I'd have a go at burning a few choice movies (ones which I already own of course). Theres two question I need to know to get it started. 1. HD format, if I download it and burn it to a regular DVDR disc will it play on a regular DVD player? (or do I need blueray or some shit). 2. Whats a good AVI-to-ISO converting program?

The converting back and forth process never turns out well. Just solve everything by hooking your computer up to your tv. Then you don't have to waste money on old fashioned dvds.

Ok so you want to know if you can take HD content you downloaded which was previously ripped and compressed, then burn it to a dvd, then try to play it on a dvd player on what kind of tv? No you can't do this. Some dvd players will play divx, avi, etc but can't handle 720p/1080p content. Why can't you hook the tv up to your computer? This circumvents the whole problem.

Well most ripped HD content comes from blurays or HDTV broadcasts. I think i might have been wrong in my previous post. I think they have released dvd players that can play HD content. This means you could simply burn the file to a dvd or put it on a flash drive and hook it into the dvd player. Although this would involve you buying a new dvd player. It also depends on the format of the stuff you have. DVD players won't usually play .mkv files (open source wrapper), but will play mpeg4, h.264 stuff (usually in an avi wrapper).

Or you could buy an RF modulator (coaxial-->rca) so you can hook your computer to your tv. Would be the cheapest option.
