I feel bad for everyone on the east coast now, having to deal with Best Buy, Circuit City and Radioshack.

This place is the mecca of electronics.

Many of the floorpeople are on commission which means you get prompt, informed attention. They KNOW the deals you are looking for, they know the competition and you can HAGGLE with them. The people, by and large, know what the fuck they are talking about.

They have 6 aisles of electronics components. breadboards, project boxes, resistors, caps, tools, tubing, wiring, everything.

Their TV area is actually dark, and you can *gasp* compare tv to tv. It's pretty refreshing to be able to see a realistic comparison of multiple sets, and they let you tweak them at your leisure (though I found most of the tv's had already been well setup).

Then you go to check out. They have 34 lanes. THIRTY FOUR. On black friday my checkout time was under two minutes. The place is brutally fast and has EVERYTHING. I hope for everyone's sake they eventually open up on the east coast.

my only complaint about frye's is their electrical components are expensive. items that you can get from digikey are 10x more at frye's, but i guess that's the price you pay for the convenience and not having to purchase in lots of 1000 pcs.

I went to the one in PHX on the way to Tuscon. I keep hoping they will open one in the RDU area.

I remember the Fry's out in the Chicago suburbs - I think I'd make a trip out there once a month just to browse alone. It was that nice. I think it's the only one east of the Mississippi...

[Edited on December 1, 2008 at 6:30 PM. Reason : Ok, guess there's two in Atlanta...]

Well I'll be damned. Atlanta just got more awesome.

At least you can GET the items. I don't know how many times in college I went wandering into RadioShack because I needed ONE tiny resistor or cap, and the look of absolutely cluelessness I would get back. In looking the other day, their prices didn't seem much more than digikey on the stuff I know I commonly forget/run out of at the last minute.

That's what everyone SAYS, until you have to deal with illiterate high school drop outs that fill in at the non-commission stores. I'll take high pressure, knowledgeable sales people over retards any day. If you walk away from a guy at Best Buy, he just continues drooling. Walk away at Fry's and he will chase you down and work out a deal.

Some people were using a Fry's sales paper to get a price match on LCDs at Walmart.

^ but buying hi fi is supposed to be like buying a car. You'd never pay full blue book value, would you? I'm tellin' you, that extra hour playing hard to get can get you anywhere from 30% to 50% off the sticker - and if you're at a true hi fi boutique (which this Fry's place may or may not be), that sticker is already low.

^^The difference is, at Fry's if you walk in to get a doorbuster (or weekend special), they KNOW what you are there for. They aren't going to waste your time, you will be in and out in 5 minutes. I've gone with two friends for exactly this, and it was a cake-walk compared to BB or CC.

They made one mention of extended warranty, and cables and mounts. We were like, we use monoprice.com, he said oh, forget it then and handed us the slip to go pay

heck, they don't even exist in Denver, but I've been wanting one for years in my hometown... alas, Microcenter will have to do.
