I own a condo and the neighborhood is really good, quiet with mostly older folks. Except the people below me. They are renters, the kids dad owns the unit, and i know they are up to no good in that place (i have my reasons). I have watched them come home into the parking lot late at night and throw beer cans into the natural areas around the buildings. I also think they are fucking with me because they know im a cop. I believe they have left trash on the breezeway in front of my unit, which is above theirs. Now im not one for shitting where i eat. I come home and mind my own business. I dont get in my neighbors business and i am nice to everyone when i see them. it just pisses me off since i own the place as opposed to renting that there are people in the place that dont give a fuck, are up to no good, and dont like that im a cop.

well hes not a kid, hes younger than me but married with a kid. i know for a fact they are up to no good, again i have my reasons, but no i havent talked to them very much. everytime i have talked to them i have been nice though. i caught them in the act throwing the beer in the natural areas, although i just watched them. and its a hunch that they left the stuff on my "porch" just to fuck with me cause im a cop

im not trying to be an ass. i just want to come home and mind my own fucking business, i wish theyd do the same.

any time there is a problem with a neighbor i really like to see people try to talk it out before taking legal action. if they want to keep being shitty about it then you gotta do whats gotta be done.

i was at our annual HOA meeting a few weeks ago. one of the neighbors complained about a guy (who just moved in) because some limbs and branches from his tree was hanging over the fence. instead of asking him to cut the tree back she called the HOA and they sent out a generic letter to everyone asking to take care of their trees. during the meeting he called the woman out about not just coming over to introduce herself to the new guy and politely asking him to cut the trees back. people are so non-confrontational.

Be very nice, very calm, even friendly and be like... "Look. I know you might not like the idea of a policeman as a neighbor. I know you guys like to have fun and be rowdy. That's fine. I do not wish to bring "work" to my home and I just want to relax here. And by "work", I mean being a police officer. I'm not going to be out to get you or watching you. But- think of me as a good neighbor and treat me as you'd want to be treated. Please do not litter on common property, keep the noise down, and please do not let anyone put trash in front of doors here. I'll return the favor. And if you need anything, let me know."

I think that is a very nice, relaxed way of saying "Leave me the fuck alone!" while being vague on your own capabilities and not really accusing them of anything DIRECTLY... but still letting them know you are aware of a problem and you are fed up. They may be anti-cop pricks who are baiting you, so being calm and friendly is not giving them what they want. OR they might appreciate your candor and tone it down..

Now, if they are doing anything highly illegal like dealing or using hard shit around a kid... then take the gloves off. But I am sure your discretion as LEO is good judgement.

If they tell you to fuck off or do not heed your requests... then call the owners and complain to a home owner's association if you have one.

I am sure you are aware, there are a lot of guys out there get off on challenging and baiting policemen to feel empowered, even if they know they will lose in the situation and are in the wrong. Getting outwardly aggressive is the last thing you want to do, even off duty.

I agree you should talk to them, but I wouldn't bring the fact that you are a cop. Stuff like ^ is the reason why some people have such a problem with cops. I'd just confront him on a man-to-man level and not a cop-to-civilian level and then if there is still a problem (and he is breaking the law) then call the police just like every other person would.

You may also want to talk to some of your cop buddies about the legality of putting up a hidden camera because you may actually need to use the tape(s) as evidence and you being a cop may have different rules than the average joe when it comes to surveillance.

yeah, really...they might be "fucking" with you in order to see how much they can get away with, but show up at their door in your uniform after getting some day, and let them know they're being loud, you've seen them litter, etc. and ask them to please tone it down

Honestly I would just complain to the HOA. That is what you pay dues and pay the management company for. Let the HOA worry about the beer cans and abandoned trash, they have the authority to fine the unit owner for all that stuff.

As far as them fucking with your particular unit (grabage, etc) get one of those cheap wireless cameras off ebay, leave it recording. Arrest them next time it happens. Send the tape to Americas dumbest criminals.
