^ true. I was only unemployed for 2 weeks, so I only collected one check. But I was approved for $511 a week. No wonder people milk that shit for as long as they can. 12/12/2008 11:10:28 AM |

^^ yeah, but you can still pull Unemployment and have a part-time job that pays up to 20% of your previous salary.
I'm officially unemployed starting Monday. The announcement that our office was closing came on October 13, and in accordance with the NC WARN Act, Dec 12 is most of our's last day. One last paycheck next week, severance pay in early January, then starting Unemployment in March or so (unless, obviously, i find something else before then)
[Edited on December 12, 2008 at 11:13 AM. Reason : .]
^ yeah, the idea is that Unemployment should keep you as close to your previous lifestyle as possible. However, if you are pulling the maximum Unemployment pay (~$500/week), then you will get it for <6 months. If your original job paid less and you only pulled, e.g. $200/week, then you can get it for 1+ years

so yes I understand why people milk that

Most banks will give you a harship forbearence on your mortgage if you get laid off as well. Will let you go interest only for 6 months in most cases.
When my dad died, my mom took a forbearance on her mortgage. Her payments are only $300 a month through the end of March. 12/12/2008 11:28:24 AM |

well, there is a huge difference in being "able" to live on $500 a week (ie someone just sets you down in a city and says, 'go do your thing, ill pay you $500 a week') and living somewhere with set payments based around a normal paycheck of $1000 per week or something.
so i mean yea, its easy to live off of 500 a week no doubt, but kind of sucks if you have a mortgage and car payments etc etc
^ didn't know that

My buddy is going through the process on his mortgage right now actually. He just got laid off himself, and they are getting ready to reduce him to interest only until he gets back to work.

Checking in....and unemployment filings are taking awhile right now with the rise in people without jobs...I've been waiting on a check for a month now. Also I very much agree that $500/wk is hard to live off of when your basic bills are more than that. 12/12/2008 12:44:42 PM |

The same realization I've had. I've been getting unemployment since like May/June. Sucks I only get like $300/week, but it's SO MUCH better than having to drive and go to a bullshit ass part time job right now (especially considering I'm still having so much pain and the job market sucksss). 12/12/2008 12:48:10 PM |

I actually work for a staffing agency. Sell employment services to businesses in the triad. So my business is kind of up and down. A LOT of companies are on hiring freezes, so that is bad for me. But the companies that are hiring are choosing to use temporary/contract employees so they don't have to pay benefits, which is good for me.
My old industry was telecom sales, and they are HURTING right now. No one is buying any of the luxury items, and it's going to be that way for a while. 12/12/2008 1:34:10 PM |

nah, of course you wouldn't. Most people are budget hawks for what they think other people should spend, but never bother to look at what would happen if they lost their own job in the middle of a deep recession12/12/2008 3:16:35 PM |
