Obama smiled. At least for now. But he knows, or should know, that Fitzgerald and his prosecutors won’t be nearly as accommodating as the press.

That article is pretty darned specious.
It argues that because Patrick Fitzgerald also prosecuted the Plame case, and the Plame case ended up putting the Bush administration through the ringer, the Obama administration will also go through the wringer?
The obvious rebuttal to this ridiculous line of thought is that the Bush administration actually was involved in the Plame case. There's not a shred of evidence indicating that this is the case with Obama, therefore there's no reason to believe there will be a Plame-esque affair.
The entire article is filled with the type of speculation that's characteristic GOP attacks on Obama. "Hey, we're not accusing him of anything. We're just asking questions that need to be asked."

Could you refute the broader point we've made-- that there's zero evidence to indicate that Obama had anything to do with the Governor's scandal? 12/18/2008 4:14:22 PM |

refute what?
speculation that it's possible for obama to have done shady stuff? ok. he could have. but so could anyone. there is no evidence that he has, so we might just as well speculate as to what Jeff Tweedy might have done wrong. He is a Chicago resident after, and he's had much more recent drug problems! 12/18/2008 4:14:44 PM |

Wat?
Brush up on your history, the Bush administration had nothing to do with the Plame case, unless you consider some idiot deputy Secretary to be part of the administration. That didn't stop Fitzgerald from going after the administration a full 3 months after he knew the identity of the leaker. If you'll recall, the only charges ever filed were 'Obstruction of Justice', which was basically due to Scooter Libby being an idiot.
In this case, 2 guys with close ties to Obama, Jesse Jackson Jr and Rahm Emmanuel, were in regular contact with Blagojevich during the Senate selection process.12/18/2008 4:39:43 PM |

If this case reaches up to Rahm Emmanuel (Chief of Staff), then technically it will have reached closer to the President than the Plame case (Karl Rove as Deputy Chief of Staff). I don't know if it'll go that far up however, and while pay to play would be an embarrassment to the new administration assuming that a direct link can even be established, it's no where near as damning as the Plame case where national security itself was treated haphazardly at best or set aside at worst to strike back at a critic of the President. 12/18/2008 6:40:54 PM |

Quote : | "The pay freeze, first reported by The Associated Press, would hold salaries at their current levels for the roughly 100 White House employees who make over $100,000 a year. "Families are tightening their belts, and so should Washington," said the new president, taking office amid startlingly bad economic times that many fear will grow worse." |
Quote : | "Obama's new lobbying rules will not only ban aides from trying to influence the administration when they leave his staff. Those already hired will be banned from working on matters they have previously lobbied on, or to approach agencies that they once targeted. ... The new rules also require that anyone who leaves his administration is not allowed to try to influence former friends and colleagues for at least two years. Obama is requiring all staff to attend to an ethics briefing like one he said he attended last week." |
Quote : | "In an attempt to deliver on pledges of a transparent government, Obama said he would change the way the federal government interprets the Freedom of Information Act. He said he was directing agencies that vet requests for information to err on the side of making information public — not to look for reasons to legally withhold it — an alteration to the traditional standard of evaluation.
Just because a government agency has the legal power to keep information private does not mean that it should, Obama said. Reporters and public-interest groups often make use of the law to explore how and why government decisions were made; they are often stymied as agencies claim legal exemptions to the law." |

Quote : | "As part of the transition, Obama last night ordered federal agencies to hold off on pending regulations made in the last days of the Bush administration. The order blocks proposals including those to ease emission requirements for factories and require some foods to be labeled by country of origin.
The administration also sought a 120-day pause in military war-crimes tribunals of suspected terrorists detained at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. Obama has vowed to close the facility and revamp the system for holding and trying enemy combatants. " |

I just learned about Larry Summers. His speech suggesting women are underrepresented in science mainly because of differences in innate ability, his dubious record on economic issues. Wow. Obama sure knows how to pick 'em, huh? 1/26/2009 6:26:57 PM |
