you can also check under Store>check for available downloads, re-download and then authorize, either way

there are plenty of easy ways to do this.. also, if you call apple they usually will let you redownload them. just tell them your hard drive failed or something and you lost all the music you had paid for and they'll usually let you do it..

I'm not understanding why my method won't work.

I do this on a weekly basis. You have zero reason to download anything again.

Copy the tracks/movies/whatever to a CD/DVD, USB drive, or external hard drive.

Take that item that you just put the downloaded things on and connect it to your new computer.

Open itunes on the new computer and go to "Store > Authorize Computer." Input your itune account info and press "OK" to make sure the new computer is Authorized.

Open the item that you put all of the downloaded stuff on and select everything. Drag it to the Itunes window and drop it on your library.

This ain't rocket science.

and I'm sorry if you're mad because I pissed in your diaper before you got the chance to, ThePeter

Only songs I've gotten from itunes were from using those pepsi caps where you could get free songs. I just burn it to cd using itunes, then rip it back into itunes as an mp3. Haven't had to worry about authorizing another computer if I want it there. There are other ways but most of them require more work.
