It can also be purchased through the bookstore." |
I had him for EC 348 and I liked it. His hand writing can be hard to read at times but he is a great prof.1/2/2009 9:15:01 AM |

Yes, but this is 302. I've had him for both. I highly recommend buying the book for 302. 1/2/2009 9:55:24 AM |

You def need to read the textbook (especially when covering the IS-LM model). It's available online for free, so you don't "need" to buy it. But it may be hassle printing out hundreds of pages and keeping them together. Plus, since his tests are open-book, you may risk forgetting to print out some very important chapters.
I recommend sucking it up and buying the book from the book store. It's hard finding a good used copy because so many people buy the paper back version, which wears out quickly (i still have my copy, which is held together with duct-tape).
It isn't that expensive, brah.

I bought my copy on amazon for dirt cheap and I would advise you do the same
also, this is quite possibly the best course I had at state. the choice is fantastic and if you understand that you will do great on the final...the rest of the stuff I thought was really easy but you just really need to pay attention in class and take good notes. 1/2/2009 12:28:30 PM |

McElroy is an amazing professor, best I've had a State so far and I wish he taught higher level econ. classes cause I'll be taking plenty of those being an econ major. I printed his book and online readings via wolfprint for about $25 total, hole-punched them all and kept them organized in a decent notebook that I'll probably keep for the rest of my undergrad career.
P.S. Are you taking the honors section with him? If you're actually interested in econ I'd recommend it, I regret not doing so.

Agreed. McElroy is the man. 2 years after graduation I rely on the lessons he taught in EC 302. I came away with a B+ but worked my tail off. If you want to make a high B or A you'll need the textbook and to read all the articles he posts...and I mean actually read these prior to the test not just to use on his open book / open note tests bc they wont help that way.
If you really want to take advantage of his unique and lasting teaching style, take advantage of his office hours as well. The cool thing about the class is he teaches you like an adult or any work environment. IE - His test formats include open book and open computer if you want but you really wont find the answers in them. He grades fairly but he even admits some of the questions he writes are tricky. He just wants to challenge your mind to think beyond what we naive undergrads think is reasoning into supporting suggestions for macro policies using facts and logical reasoning.
It was fun having his class at the same time I took Soc 241 (Agriculture and Rural Society). The professor of Soc 241 basically denounced free markets to the extreme and I quoted her as saying that we would all be better off in subsistence rural living. Not sure if she still teaches this course but the professor of Soc 241 just would not accept the concept of the PPF and that there are winners and losers in a free market economy. I would constantly compare and contrast the lessons of 241 and 302 with McElroy via email and his office hours and we had some pretty interesting back and forth. If you go into his class open minded you will never really look back at the news media the same.
That said, I do have the book for this course but it was one of the few books I kept after graduation that I still take a look back on. I think I got it off Amazon for cheap since it is the paperback B&W version.
And, while McElroy is a great professor, don't mess with his attendance policy. 3 freebies and 3 cut papers, after that you start going downhill quick (if he still uses this policy).
Sit up front - his handwriting is awful and will provide mild comic relief at times. 1/4/2009 5:25:09 PM |
