Since all I've been hearing lately is how good rentals all recent games are, I've decided to sign up for Gamefly. Here's what I have queued up so far for my 360:
Prince of Persia Gears of War 2 Call of Duty: World at War Half-Life 2: The Orange Box Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Last Remnant Army of Two Iron Man
Already got and played The Force Unleashed and am about to send it back. I'm not sure how long this queue will last, with school starting back up and all, but with the 1 game at a time plan it should work out pretty well.
Anyone else on Gamefly?

This one is for the discussion on what games you're planning on renting though
I've added Mercenaries 2 and Secret Service...
Apparently the reviews say its fun, so should be worth checking out. 1/1/2009 5:29:21 PM |

how much is the monthly fee?
I've been thinking about getting it too, but the cost I found was like $23/month, which is a little high since I dont play games every single day 1/1/2009 7:20:32 PM |
ThePeter TWW CHAMPION 37709 Posts user info edit post |
There's a 10-day free trial (which isn't really long enough to begin with), first month is about 8 bucks, and the 1 game at a time deal is 15.95 a month. The 2-games at a time package that they advertise heavily is 23. You can cancel it at any time, so what I'm probably gonna do is use it until I don't have time to play, get bored, or run out of games in my queue and cancel it, then start it up again when there are a bunch of new releases out. 1/2/2009 1:26:37 AM |

take The Orange Box off your list unless you REALLY want to play all of half life 2 again (i don't understand why valve does this shit). TF2 sucks on xbox, just go to a friends house to play Portal.
It sucks, it takes forever for them to ship the next game. Its been a week inbetween for the two games i've gotten so far. There's a fast reship thing if your mail carrier uses some kind of scanning email thing but i haven't bothered to call the post office and figure out which one i would take the games to or which drop box i could leave that PEICE in. Basically for that shit they send you the game as soon as the post office gets it, instead of when they actually get the game back. I don'

I actually never played Half-Life 2, and I was basically just going for Portal . 1/2/2009 2:18:38 PM |

If you haven't played Half-Life 2 you really should consider it. It is on my top 5 list of all time favorite video games ever.

The terrible turn around times make it not worth 20 dollars in my opinion.
IF you cancel your account for awhile they will usually ask you to come back for a reduced 10 dollar rate for a month.

^agreed
They have a TERRIBLE turnaround time. I sent my 2 games back early last Monday and will probably be receiving only of the two new games tomorrow. It said the other one hasn't even been shipped yet. WTF
I realize that New Years Day was last week but the games are taking along time to get here. 1/6/2009 4:02:13 PM |

The two game plan would probably be good for tying over the turnaround time...depending on how they package. If you could keep one game and then cycle another out that would be cool, but since I'm on the one game at a time I don't know what they do.
I sent back Force Unleashed probably, the 30th or 31st and they sent an email saying they received it on the 2nd. I got an email today (the 6th) saying they've shipped Prince of Persia, which was on the top of my Q. 1/6/2009 5:43:45 PM |

Wait, so you're paying $16 a month for 1 game and you get a 10-day turnaround? Even if you managed to only keep the games for 5 days at a time you'd still only get 2 games a month at that rate. Wouldn't it just be cheaper to rent stuff at Blockbuster?] 1/6/2009 5:47:56 PM |
ThePeter TWW CHAMPION 37709 Posts user info edit post |
Probably
I think some other threads say that Blockbuster would be a better deal, but there's the whole going out to rent it deal, plus limited availability and poor selection of local stores.
They recommend the 2 game at a time plan, which is 22 dollars a month. That might be a better deal. 1/6/2009 5:58:09 PM |

I don't understand the whole videogame rental concept. Unless you plan on renting newly released games and rushing through them, what's the point? I mean Orange Box is frequently on sale for around 20 bucks at bestbuy. The rest of them will be less than 35 in a year anyways and then you can own them forever. Maybe it is just my inner hoarder talking, but I just like to hold onto games and then maybe replay them in a couple years. 1/6/2009 6:31:18 PM |

I loved when blockbuster had the "no late fee" policy. I would rent a game for $5 and keep it for a month before they charged me the full price of the game. 1/6/2009 6:38:17 PM |

well i've payed $6 and played Saints Row 2, Force Unleashed and Left 4 dead. All of which i had no desire to play after i saw what there was to see

^^^ my main reasoning for rental is to basically preview the game before i go out and buy it. While it may cost me five bucks to rent it, I would much rather do that than pay $60 for a game that I hate and can only get $30 max if I try to sell it opened. I dont even try to beat a game over a short span, but instead I see myself as giving the game a test drive.
I didnt rent enough games from gamefly to make the membership worth it to me. Especially when you think about how far their distribution centers are (I think I was receiving games from Pittsburgh). 1/7/2009 12:52:32 AM |

Gamefly is fucking garbage
I still haven't got my first game (which they shipped on Monday) and they still haven't shipped my 2nd game which they received last week. I'm canceling this shit before they charge me. Good thing I did a one month free trial before I actual had to pay for this crap.
Buying and selling games on Craiglist has been working well so I'm going to continue to do that. 1/7/2009 2:46:39 PM |

fuck Gamefly
didn't get my game today. I tried to call them to complain but their offices are only open 9 am - 1 pm PST.
EDIT: I just received an e-mail response from a complaint I made yesterday. I complained about to them about not receiving FIFA 2009 yet and them not even sending NHL 2009 yet. They responding by telling me that they will ship Tiger Woods 2009 within the next 2 days. WTF. Tiger Woods was dead last of 5 games in my game queue. I would have put that game on the top of my list if I wanted it that bad. I sent another e-mail complaining to them about sending the wrong game and I'm going to call tomorrow morning.
EDIT #2: Just got off the phone with them. They said there is nothing they can do about sending Tiger Woods since it has already been shipped. They won't give me a refund or anything else for that matter. I'm obviously not going to send Tiger Woods back because it'll take them another 2 fucking weeks to send me the right game. By that time, my subscription will be over.
If only this service was like NetFlix. I send in my movies on Monday and get the correct movies on Wednesday.

I think the delivery times have gotten a lot better since they added the Tampa and Pittsburgh shipping facilities...I got an email today letting me know they were shipping Saints Row 2...there are 2 more that they'll be sending soon, I have about 8 in my queue 1/8/2009 3:08:36 PM |

I used to have this and during this time of the year (October - Late January) it was great. Always had a queue lined up with all the cool new games coming out.
But later in the year when nothing came out it was a waste of money.
I remember them saying they revamped their shipping sites but I guess from all the complaints it's pretty much as shitty as it ever was. 1/8/2009 3:50:30 PM |

maybe I've just been really lucky with them
i've been a member for probably 2-3 years now...I usually get an email within 2-3 days of sending a game back that says they have received the game, and another email that says the next game has shipped...in that 2-3 years, i've only had 1 game i didn't receive...i let gamefly know and they sent out another copy of the game and didn't hassle me...they're not as fast as Netflix, but its still a pretty good deal...I think I'm paying about $30/month for my 4-games-at-a-time plan...which is about the equivalent of buying 6 games a year 1/8/2009 4:53:48 PM |
