First Trip of 2009....Disaster!

Had some time off so I head to Nags Head to do some striper fishing. Went out a little late w/ the forecast calling for 10 kts, 2-3's and the Duck Buoy was saying <10kts. We clear the inlet and its more like 20-25kts, 5-6. We slowly trudge up the coast and find birds and tons of marks. There is no way to troll effectively w/ the tide going one way and the waves coming the other. We find marks and jig on them...nothing but dogfish and lots of them. Weather clears a little bit and we run up to Duck, more dogfish. We call it a day.

On the way in, we run through the cut and boom, we run hard aground at about 30 knots. Both motors fly up and send shit flying all over the cockpit. The stern is dug but there is enough water behind to motor out and we are a foot of the edge. No way in hell I was getting in that water. Well the impact throws off one of the hydraulic motor lifts so no the boat is back in the shop.

I leave this morning and my dad does to...half way through the trip his truck blows up. Luckily it was about 30 minutes from home so he had a friend come tow the boat and he limped home.

Its an 05 w/ 115k. Boat, motor, trailer, is around 7500-8500lbs maybe more. Its really never been a problem. Hopefully we sell the boat this year and get something that can't be towed.

Nope. He said he was towing and the ABS warning light came on and then the speedometer kept jumping everywhere, the battery was leaking and then tranny started heating up.

the shad need to hurry. hopefully i will slay them on spring break like usual.

my box of darts and spoons got left in the boat and all the darts rusted. spoons were fine though. most of the darts i had left after last year were the kind i don't even use anymore though.

anybody ever fished anywhere around Daytona Beach? I have to be down there for Speedweeks here in a few short weeks and am thinking about pulling my boat down there. Anybody been out on the ocean there? Last time I was down there it looked really slick.

I dunno if there are fish in the infield lake at Daytona. I'm sure there are, but I dont know how often people fish in it. I have been fishing for peacock bass in the infield lake at Homestead. They stock that one and its in the driver/owner motorcoach lot. Ryan Newman has a fishing tourney down there every year.

Well, looks like I won't get in another Striper trip this season Luckily, the budget is fine this year so I can seek out some tuna jigging combos

Anyone watch Hooked on Bass last night on Nat Geo? New show that follows people who are obsessed with landing trophy bass. As soon as I heard about it, I knew they were going to profile Dixon Lake in N. San Diego (sure enough) and I even remembered the dude's name that they profiled. I fished there probably 50 times a year and grew up 3 miles from there.

He fished Dixon for over 150 days in a row (!) for at least 10 hours a day (Feb-Jun), 3 years in a row looking to land a record fish, one he had already caught.

I only got one trip in for Stripers. Just couldn't make it happen w/ weather and schedules. The Stripers have been all over. For a couple of weeks they never came farther south than Ocean City, MD. I just talked to some friends who spent two days out of Virginia Beach without a nibble. Oh well, thats how it goes sometimes.

Headed down to Morehead City Thursday. Kayak fishing no doubt, maybe some boat time depending on availability.

Hopefully I'll sell my Costas on the way down.

Anybody have any inshore success around Carteret County lately?

Yep, it's only 72 damn acres and has produced three top 25 bass. World Record bass was caught there but foul-hooked so it didn't count.
