Dude,you can't hate on someone for wanting to test the waters, just for taking an interview. BC didn't put in their contract anything about what would happen if he wanted to look elsewhere before his contract was up. Jeff made sure he covered his ass if he were to get fired. Their AD just said it was "against the spirit of the contract" for him to look elsewhere. I guarantee you this incident has shed a negative light on the coaching position at that school.

are you on crack? BC is not a destination job by any stretch of the imagination, so if a coach is successful there they are going to interview for other jobs. So the reasonable thing to do is find another good coach not try and blackmail the current coach into staying. I don't know why any sane coach would want that job now (except for the current assistants) if they are gonna fire you as soon as you inteview or recieve interest from another job.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a higher level position but :

1) He didn't even let his AD know he was planning to interview. The AD heard it through the media first, that's bullshit.

2) He just finished the 2nd of the 5th year of the contract that he signed when BC was looking for somebody who would be there long-term. He had a change of heart that quickly?

3) He wanted out at BC anyways; he wants any other job in the NFL, even an assistant position. It wasn't so much that he wanted the Jets job, he just wanted something different than BC. Apparently he didn't like being a college coach at all, he hated the recruiting, meeting with alumni, etc.

So as athletic director, you have this guy that has flat out said he wants any job that isn't yours, even though he signed on for a five year contract... why would you even want him to come back to the position if he somehow can't find a job in the NFL? The only option was to fire him now and start the search for a replacement.

*It's pretty frustrating for fans/athletic programs when all these coaches are just jumping at the next available job... at what point do we start taking some power away from coaches and make them hold up their end of their lucrative and lengthy contracts?

that's only if there is a buyout clause though, and we don't really know if there is one in this case...but the point still stands that no one really honors coaching contracts anymore (except for the buyout part) either on the AD side or the coaching side

RIGHT. What if he doesn't find another suitable job and comes back to BC? Why is a college football head coaching position so much different than any other job? If you don't want to work somewhere anymore, you quit and find another job. they were talking earlier on the radio about the difference in college and NFL coaches...in the NFL, if you even talk with another team before the season is completely over, you can get fined hundreds of thousands of dollars and reprimanded...in college though its like "yeah who cares"

Good for the AD for sticking to his guns, but letting this become so public of a fight was a big mistake.

They've lost 2 head coaches in just over 2 years time.

It looks bad for the AD, it looks like he has issues working with his employees. If he can make a splash hire he needs to do it. Someone online pointed out Charlie Strong, who basically can't turn down a coaching job if they come calling at this point. I've thought he'd be a great hire for years, and as much as I don't want to see him at BC he'd be the best snap choice for them.

I applaud action like this, I guess most people here expect coaches to be cutthroat assholes but trying to get out two years after a university committed to you and gave you your first head coaching job (I think) is disrespectful, four years should be the limit

Let me be clear, I'm not saying every coach in every situation has to fulfill their contracts in their entirety 100% of the time. All he had to do was go to the athletic director and say, "Hey, you know what? This job isn't for me... I want to be in the NFL. I think I'm going to resign." But he didn't do that, he basically forced the AD's hand.

Unless there was something explicitly in the contract that said interviewing for other jobs was cause for termination, which doesn't seem likely, BC will pay Jagz his money. He can make that along with whatever NFL salary he gets.

BC's disinterested fanbase can't afford to pay two coaches.



Also I'm not sure Jagz was after just any NFL job until BC threatened to fire him. He left a plum NFL OC job for BC.

^^I read somewhere that there was a stipulation that he wouldn't interview for another position for the first 3 years of his contract. I'm not sure if it was NFL-exclusive, any position, of even completely legit, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.

For a program that was on the rise like BC, they lose their head coach, they see what is happening to other programs with guys like Saban and Petrino jumping around and such, and they add in a stipulation that he stays for at least 3 of his 5 year contract. That doesn't seem that unreasonable to me.
