Quote : | "t's 1964, St. Nicholas in the Bronx. A charismatic priest, Father Flynn, is trying to upend the schools' strict customs, which have long been fiercely guarded by Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the iron-gloved Principal who believes in the power of fear and discipline. The winds of political change are sweeping through the community, and indeed, the school has just accepted its first black student, Donald Miller. But when Sister James, a hopeful innocent, shares with Sister Aloysius her guilt-inducing suspicion that Father Flynn is paying too much personal attention to Donald, Sister Aloysius sets off on a personal crusade to unearth the truth and to expunge Flynn from the school. Now, without a shard of proof besides her moral certainty, Sister Aloysius locks into a battle of wills with Father Flynn which threatens to tear apart the community with irrevocable consequence." |
The acting and screenplay are phenomenal. I had a few problems with a couple of directing/cinematography shots but nothing that will drag the film down. This would be my favorite drama of 2008.

I work at a Regal 14, I was surprised we got this a couple weeks ago. Best thing currently playing there by FAR. 1/9/2009 2:09:18 AM |

We got a couple of weeks ago too I just haven't had a chance to see it until tonight. The beginning of the film reminded me of my early years of being an acolyte. 1/9/2009 2:30:12 AM |

I love hearing moviegoers hating on this on their way out. the same ones that love the spirit and disaster movie. 1/9/2009 2:43:58 AM |

I thought this movie was fucking great. What's the naysayers' chief complaint?

I will step in as a naysayer for one simple reason.
I thought this movie was great. The acting was top-notch, the story was fantastic...just all-around a wonderful picture.
And then there was the ending.
Now I don't have issue with the lack of clarity, I am cool with that, makes it interesting. However, the ham-fisted, GARBAGE final lines delivered by Streep on that bench made me want to vomit. Seriously? Wailing on and on about how she has doubt? It was like they were forcing the title into the line for some reason. It felt so incredibly forced and out of place with the rest of the film. And again, it's not the sentiment of what she was saying, it is the word choices. Really ruined what had been an awesome movie experience to that point. 1/9/2009 11:37:29 AM |

i didn't like it as much as the other people i saw it with, and its not that i need action and explosions, i really like a lot of dramas. the acting was very good, and it had some good funny moments, the confrontation in her office was excellent, but overall i just thought it was sort of slow and at the end i just felt unfulfilled, and not because of the ambiguity
it was also hot as fuck in the theater which makes the whole experience more unpleasant

I just saw this last night and loved it.
I was afraid it was going to be about priests molesting boys, but that wasn't even the most central theme to the movie.
I am convinced Father Flynn was innocent. If you listen to his sermons, you understand why he had to move on at the end of the movie. Once the gossip has started, there is no stopping it. He realized that Aloysius was not going to stop until she built a circumstantial case against him and tainted his career.
The symbolism was good. The winds of change (and Aloysius hating it), Aloysius the accuser holding a pitchfork (light bulb changer) when confronting Donald's mother, Aloysius covering for the blind nun so she wouldn't be thrown out (Aloysius was blinding by her conviction and did not want to be thrown out of her traditional church), the innocence of Sister James (representing Aloysius's innocence) being lost, the all seeing eye in the stained glass window in the hallway.
The best scene was were Aloysius admitted she had committed a mortal sin, but she had been forgiven yet she was willing to dig up Father Flynn's past to get dirt against him. 2/3/2009 10:46:58 PM |

I didn't really think it told a meaningful or interesting story.
I guess if I was catholic, maybe i'd have liked it more though. 4/30/2009 1:22:21 AM |

Rented this a couple of weeks ago, and I was quite impressed. Very well written and acted. I didn't even catch some of the symbolism either (lightbulb changer--pitchfork, wouldn't have thought of that) and the ambiguity is very important. Worth seeing, hell probably worth seeing again to catch what else I might have missed. 4/30/2009 10:48:45 AM |
