I am in the process of finishing my upstairs bonus room (~1100 sq ft.) and had thought about installing 2-4 in-ceiling speakers to run to my surround system that will also be upstairs. Does anyone have any suggestions on which speakers to get or if it is not worth it? I have seen some at lowes and home depot for about $60/pair but didn't know if they were decent. I'm not looking for excellent surround sound quality because I will mainly use it for music/ball games when I have people over. Thanks

one rule not to forget on speakers... you are installing them for a long term install.

dont buy something that you are going to want to replace in 1 year! buy it once and love it forever, bose

i agree with not buying bose..but people buy bose because it is expensive and they don't realize there are better options for the same or less $$

yeah, bose is over-rated/priced.

Speakers last for a long time. They typically only break if you break them. Shell out some $ upfront. Look at it as a long term investment. You have a multi-zone receiver?

What's your budget like? Do they have to be in-ceiling or in-wall? It seems like you would have plenty of room for bookshelves or or even floorstanding speakers.

I highly recommend Sonance in-wall/ceiling speakers. They're awesome for the price and they're not even that expensive if you can get them directly from a distributor.

Here is the layout I had in mind for upstairs and I was looking at putting the in-ceiling speakers over by the pool table. I haven't really decided on a budget for this yet. I was thinking around a few hundred on 2-4 speakers. Right now I have one of the $300 all0-in-one Panasonic surround systems which is what I would initially use as my receiver until I upgrade.

Make sure you get a subwoofer and a decent amp. If you can get one of the Yamahas or Pioneers with the hardware calibrator, that can make up for cheaper speakers (Yahama calls it YPAO, Pioneer MCACC, HK and other brands have it too, but I don't know what they call it).

I'm with duro982: what you want is a multi-zone receiver. Set up a listening area at the pool table and a proper surround sound listening area at the TV.

It also looks like you'll be running speaker wire a good distance. Make sure you size your wiring appropriately.

Thanks, I will look at the multi-zone receivers and I have already emailed Sonance to find a local distributor. Best Buy carries them but I wanted to see if there were anymore that may have them cheaper.
