are you sure you want to disassemble your laptop and replace the internal cd drive?

i mean, it's really not that hard to do on most laptops, but i'd say it's beyond the skills of maybe 85% of all laptop owners

dont most laptops have cd/dvd/blu-ray/hd-dvd drives that are easily removable?

yep, but they are proprietary designs/doors/covers.

dell inspiron 6400

i've read some of the reviews on newegg and it seems that they are plug and play. maybe the new one comes with some generic instructions? i can take things apart and put them back together pretty easy, i just want to avoid software problems.

just make sure you get the correct interface - some are SATA, the majority are ATA. yours is ATA.

the connector will only go on one way, you can't really screw it up.

look at step 2

thanks for the help

the sony i was looking at says it connects via PATA/EIDE. is this something that will work with my laptop? are there other types of ATA that are compatable?

yes, it'll work.

just make sure it's the same physical size as your existing drive (most are the same size) and you're good
