just finished my trial and it was a brilliant success
by using my 1000w heater on a timer set for 3 hours before i leave for work, i have instant heat and save .32 gallons of fuel every day during warmup
it costs $.39 in power a day, which the fuel makes up for, and the timer paid for itself in two weeks by not having to leave it plugged in all night

badass. i wonder if it would work for a car that isn't garage kept? would any savings be realized or would i be pissing in the wind b/c of the thermal loss from being outside? 1/17/2009 11:52:51 PM |

is this a block heater or just a ceramic heater in the cabin? 1/18/2009 10:23:02 AM |

I'm surprised that timer can handle 1000W. I'd plug it in far from your house in case it pulls a Ford and catches fire. 1/18/2009 10:57:02 AM |

diesels need that 1/18/2009 1:31:51 PM |

^^ that is during cold driving, diesels do not reach full combustion when cold, you have less power and dump raw fuel 1/18/2009 3:01:36 PM |

my powerstroke needs the block heater plugged in just to start period if it's much colder than freezing. in it's defense, i think there's something wrong with the glow plug preheating system. it didn't used to be such a bitch. 1/19/2009 11:07:16 PM |

The only time I have needed the block heater was when I had injector problems. After new injectors the truck starts almost instantly even at single digits.1/20/2009 9:28:07 AM |

^^^^yeah, i've already replaced 4 injectors and 1 injector wiring harness over the past few years. probably should have just done them all at once, but oh well. bitches are $texas. it was a great engine up until the last 20k miles or so (140k total), but it's nickel and dimed me to death since then.
the b59 cummins in the bus i used to have and the m11 cummins in my current toterhome don't care what temp it is or how long they've been sitting. as long as the batteries have a charge, they crank on the first hit. 1/20/2009 1:36:08 PM |

Looking on that site:
2. What is the cost of BlueHeat®? M.S.R.P. is $1,795 USD, installed.
That's a bit much for an area that freaks out with 2" of snow on the ground.1/21/2009 12:22:59 PM |

^^why yes it most certainly is a people heater, but it also cycles warm coolant through the engine.
I was only thinking about these because a customer in Canada ordered their recent trucks with the TSL17's
[Edited on January 21, 2009 at 9:12 PM. Reason : and no, I never meant that it was the same as a block heater] 1/21/2009 8:50:48 PM |
