So, I have a 500gb external hard drive. I have been running Time Machine with it. However, I was thinking about partitioning the hard drive. Using half to use for time machine and the other half as long term storage. Has anyone done this before and had any problems? Does anyone recommend any software?

Just use disk utility in the Applications -> Utility folder.
Should work fine.

^ that won't work if he's trying to just resize the partition.

You'd have to get a gparted live CD with HFS support.

But if he just has time machine data on why bother... It will just backup again.

I have the exact setup you are looking to do. The only thing I noticed is that my time machine backups give me the "failed to back up" error every now and then. Might just be time machine itself, but it is nice to have both room to transfer stuff and time machine backups.

^^ Time Machine keeps daily backups... I personally value being able to step back 1 day at a time.
