Lets not kid ourselves, no one really knows who Obama really is. He ran on very vague feel good notions, "Hope", "Change", "Yes We Can". In doing so everyone projected their own meanings of those platitudes on him. Although few know what hope and change really mean other than anti-Bush. He has been very light on specifics. Also, the cult of personality around him is a bit scary since no one really knows who he is, and expectations of him are so high. Should be an interesting 4 years 1/20/2009 4:21:08 PM |

just because you didn't bother to look into it doesn't mean that obama didn't lay out many policy specifics that went beyond political speeches. will things change once these ideas are filtered through congress? of course. but to claim that somehow he is an empty vessel is intellectually lazy.
did obama capitalize on people attaching their own beliefs onto things he has never stood for? yes, of course. but that was a political move that any presidential candidate must do to get through our ridiculously stupid electoral and primary/caucus system.
oh yeah and ibtl. there are lots of threads this could go in. 1/20/2009 4:27:34 PM |

You're kidding yourself.
You can't project your own interpretation (or lack thereof) on to what Obama said.
Obama portrayed who he was quite clearly, I think, it is your failing that you can't see that.

The majority of people here liked McCain (a lot). It was his choice of Palin and embracing JtP in order to win over the neocon-right that scared a lot of people off.

I can't figure out if it's liberals or conservatives who are supposed to have Obama Hussein Derangement Syndrome.
Both have been going crazy in very different ways over the last few weeks. One group thinks it's the second coming of jesus christ and the other thinks it's the apocalypse (so these idiots start stupid threads about it). 1/20/2009 6:23:36 PM |

I think it's a bipartisan problem. Just like an Obama administration will be a national problem. He is a very poor choice for president, but it won't be the end of the world. If he makes a mess, we'll just have to clean it up and move on. 1/20/2009 6:25:37 PM |

To all the Obamatrons and supporters its different when the shoe is on the other foot.
Most of the people in this thread spent the last 8 years criticizing every little thing Bush did and some of you are still bitter over the 2000 election (Bush won by the way even with liberals doing their unofficial recounts after the fact) So now you get angry when people challenge what Obama wants to do.
Some of the things he wants to do will help but lets be honest a majority of the voters didn't know his stance on issues outside of soundbites and what CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC would tell them. I hope he helps this country but I am leery to get behind him on every thing he does. I am tired of people that say if you criticize him your racist or part of the problem. Were you part of the problem when you were criticizing Bush. Just because he has a darker skin tone does not make him infallible. He is going to make mistakes hes human. The difference being that when he makes mistakes the media won't go and try to make a mountain out of a mole hill. 1/20/2009 7:10:07 PM |

he didn't say "yes we can" at all in the address
and he said "hope" and "change" less than 3 times each during the address (which is impressive considering the very nature of change inherent with an inauguration)
so why don't you take the main point of your thesis and shove it up your ass
ps - how does it feel to be in the "vast minority" 1/20/2009 7:20:03 PM |

The thing that gets me the most is just the sheer dis-respect liberals have shown to Bush, even as he is leaving office.....And Im not a Bush fan nor did I ever vote for him....but Im still offended by the disrespect. I will be very critical of Obama because I disagree with his policies, but Im not going to attack him personally. The liberal dis-respect towards Bush was just pretty atrocious in my opinion. so what you're saying is
you don't understand how people can disrespect a president who has 8 years of fuck-ups, botched shit, and a legacy barely better than Warren G Harding's (if that)
but you don't mind blatantly talking shit about a president who has less than 8 hours of presidency behind him

I agree. Having a 30ft inflatable Bush doll and then encouraging passerbys to throw shoes at it on the Capitol mall was pretty lame. Booing him and singing "Na Na" was childish.
I didn't want Obama to win. But I salute our country's ability to elect a minority member to the highest gov't position.
He has a tough job. He and his people have ginned up a lot of expectations over the past two years. I hope he's a fast learner. I hope he doesn't pull the country too far into socialism. And I hope the democrats lose Congress in 2 years.1/20/2009 8:12:06 PM |
