On my first gen yota truck, the tail lights and brake lights are seperate. The brake lights are mounted on the flat bed, and are mounted similar to Wranglers. They only come on for braking, and have just one bulb. All the LED lights I find require cutting into the body for mounting. Have any of you seen some LEDs that I can use in place of my brake lights? Another question, will they (LEDs) work in place of the regular bulbs, or is there some type of regulator I'll need? I'm new to LEDs, and I'll get some pics of what I'm talking about soon. thanks 1/29/2009 10:38:50 AM |

Depends on what you want. Do you want the factory housings to light up like late model cars with LEDs? Do you want tricked out spaceship looking taillamps like a high school Honda? Or do you not fucking care, you just want some bright ass LED lamps?
[Edited on January 29, 2009 at 1:34 PM. Reason : Also how much work are you willing to do to accomplish this? Cutting into the body? Welding? Paint?] 1/29/2009 1:33:49 PM |

well the current lights are just normal lights, they just come on when the brakes are applied. i'd like something brighter, so thats why i want to go with LEDs. the lights on there now are about 4 inches wide by 3 inches tall rectangular. they are just screwed to the body with 2 screws. I've looked at some LEDs at some truck stops, but most of them require cutting a hole the shape of the light. What I'm really looking for is a whole LED unit that can be bolted to the bed in the place of the old lights. Just checked superbrightleds.com and might just get some LED bulbs and see how I like those, if I can't find a whole houisng.
you can see them here, the ones on top

you'll only need a resistor to prevent the fast blink of a turn signal. i can't think of any lights that would work for you that could be had cheap and easily. i know northern tool carries them but i can't think of any they might have that would be large enough. the only styles they have are either trailer stop/signal lights or side marker lights and neither is what you are looking for. one place i would recommend checking and i can't think of the name of the place but i can show you where it is via link. they have a decent selection however i don't know if they'd have anything different than a truck stop. another thing you might could try is searching for some whelen tir3 or whelen led. they make externally-mountable led lighting but they'll probably be more than what you are wanting to spend.

why don't you get the doide box for using a 4 wire trailer plug with seperate turn signals, and just run it all into one light?
you wire in your turn signal, brake and tail, and it allows you to use a single turn/stop type light without a separate turn signal and it won't backfeed into the vehicle
overton's has these for about $50, or check with carquest or fleetpride for truck lights

most of the light manufacturers also sell boxes or brackets that you could mount under the body so you don't have to cut big holes for grommet mounted lights
At work we buy most of our exterior lighting from Whelen, Code3 / PSE Amber, Federal Signal, or Truck-lite.

yeah, you should be able to find something from truck-lite that requires little to no modification for that sort of application. 1/31/2009 12:02:25 PM |
