I seriously don't understand this. Do people thoughtfully type out well capitalized messages and then put them through an inverse capitalizer???

well that's kinda cool. at least they care. (or act like they do)

^ from what I've seen, each department was already handling the budget reversions in their own way... some cut services, some are leaving open positions unfilled. all of the protections we thought we had as state employees are gone.

besides that, after all the uncertainty caused by a total of 12% of the university's budget being taken away this year... now they add this on top of it.

i can understand Erskine wanting to keep options open, but all this is doing right now is holding a knife up to employees' collective throat. and that thing is already starting to slice a bit.

All I got to say is if they get furloughs, we get collective bargaining. Either we can be a team or we can be adversaries.

but really yall the stimulus bill should just be tax cuts. don't try to help local/state govts with their budget shortfalls. that's socialism

I need to learn how to get in on this financial aid they are talking about, I keep getting the shaft and having to co-op to just barely make ends meet. The tuition increase to $5159 was for a full two semesters, and not a single semester...right?

Someone in CALS sent out the minutes from the CALS Administrative Deans meeting, pretty much stating that most positions can expect a pay cut between 3 and 10%. It also said that departments can begin a RIF, if they have gotten approval. I feel bad for CHASS, CALS can at least generate research grant money to cover peoples pay. Not a good time to be a University Employee.

I want to be in the library when I graduate. Job openings right now are pretty slim.

Some of you need some perspective. it is a great time to be a state employee. The best time, in fact. Despite the fact that just about every other corporation has already laid off a bunch of people and is planning to lay off more, most state agencies and universities are doing everything they can to preserve jobs.

I will support a furlough, but not a pay cut. In my department, there has not been any discussion about pay cuts. Its mainly been hiring freezes. We are all very aware that at some point there will probably be layoffs, but doubt the layoffs will be as deep as they are in corporate world.

+1 to CarZin's statement. Every department, or at least the ones I know of, is working their hardest to preserve people's jobs. So far it's been hiring freezes, purchasing freezes, and eliminating open positions. Layoffs are coming eventually, the writing is on the wall, but that discussion has not been started yet. And, even with that likely on the way, I feel much much more secure here than I would in just about any private sector job.
