Married - filing jointly first year
F: 2750 S: 308
... or something like that. I think a lot of that excess comes from my wife not having adjusted her... whatever you call them. Withholdings, I think. I know I did that for my job at State and started getting more each month, but got less back come tax time.
Honestly, though, I kind of like getting a huge chunk back. Had we been getting that money, it would have been spent on random shit we dont need. Granted, some of this money will be spent on random shit we don't need (a trip), but we'll also be able to put some into long term savings and emergency fund.
Edit: Do you think its worth it for me to go back and take the time to try to see what we would get back separately? I know my wife doesn't have any major deductions (all mine are school and standard - I guess she would get standard too). She made only about as much as did because she started her time job halfway through the year and was a student the other half... basically, we both have about the exact same income and almost the same deductions.

$1600 Fed $650 State
I'm wondering if the state will "unfortunately be forced to" delay the payments due to the economy. 2/3/2009 9:34:37 AM |

^^ oh I know, dude, and I've adjusted mine to try to minimize that. We just took on her car payment that her parents were paying before she graduated (I hate car payments, I think we have both learned our lesson about buying new cars). That extra $200 a month would really go a long way in helping cover that. I'll see about getting her to change back.
Also, getting about $800 or $1000 back is still a nice surprise. I just like getting a little something back. Dont judge me!

There's an easy way to fix that:
Don't spend it on things you don't need. Fix your withholding rates so they aren't taking out so much, then have that amount automatically drafted from your pay (or from your bank account on paydays) into investments or a money market acct.
This is, for most people, the best way to handle saving and investing in general: figure out how much you need to be putting away, then have it automatically drafted, then don't touch it.2/3/2009 12:58:12 PM |

Looks like the gubment is trying to increase the home buyer tax relief to $15,000 (max). I wonder what the window to buy would be if it does pass.

No, I would imagine if you claim it this year and they pass the bill, you'll be able to claim the remainder next year. I don't think it would apply to 2008's tax laws. Pretty sure it wouldn't.2/5/2009 2:39:14 PM |
