*He sees the truth. It's written all over our faces.

Anyone else watching this?

I'm hoping watching this will give me a better understanding of facial expressions.

Yep, saw the previews for this and wanted to see it.

Hopefully it gets enough attention to warrant more seasons.

I really enjoy this show too so far; but their interpretation of the law in tonight's episode was incorrect. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but as a law student it really stood out to me.

Ehhhhhh, I wouldn't say that. It's an interesting concept, and Mr. Orange is good in the role.

He'll keep embarrassing smug government-types that even Shakespeare would think are overacting, there will be some secrets from his past revealed, he and the vaguely familiar chick from Medical Investigation will knock boots a few times, and then it will be canceled by the end of the season.

I watched a few episodes just because I'd seen the commercials a million times and there was nothing else on during that timeslot.

Luckily Life is back, because Lie To Me is terrible.

shows:
Lie to Me
Mentalist
Psych
Criminal Minds

they really push the premise down your throat and harp on 3-4 specific expressions a lot (wrinkles on forehead anyone?). that said, it is still an enjoyable watch.

Can you really read people's intentions based on minute facial features? I'm guessing it's total bullshit, but does this show have any grounding in reality?

It's bullshit, mostly. The entire show is designed to make women think they have some sort of superpower just because they look people in the eyes. It's like Murder She Wrote with a milf version of Angela Lansbury.

Nothing against Angela, of course.

just watched the first episode, and really enjoyed it.
The two stories were better than the usual crime show dramas, especially the murder one - it had me confused (or not knowing who it really was) until the end

There's lots of research being done on microexpressions. There's a dude somewhere that catalogued every minute muscular movement of every facial expression either...it's really hard to make some of these faces unless you have the right emotion behind it.

"A microexpression is a flash of emotion that tells what you are really feeling. For instance, if you ask someone how they are and they reply they are doing great when let's say they are dying inside, people who can see microexpressions will likely see a flash of despair regardless of what this person is actually saying.

In essence, your face has a natural lie detector built right in it which may indicate that you are being deceptive. And guess what, no matter how hard you try, you can't fake it out, or stop your true expressions from flashing themselves. They are involuntary."

the main character is based on a real person, Paul Ekman. Also like they point out on the show, the expression have to be put in context to alow to know if they are actually lying or its something else.

case in point...they explain why polygraphs are unreliable

I'm still watching, but I'm not really sure why. I don't think it's very good.

I think the reason you gave for liking it is one of the biggest things I dislike about it. I feel like as long as you pay just a little bit of attention, you can figure out everything. And instead of making me feel smart it makes me think "what's the big deal? anyone can do this shit".

agreed, I feel like this show has a lot of potential but the execution leaves something to be desired, the mystery of the week is always trite and convoluted.

I hate how in every drama now the hero has to have some sort of mental superpower.

Lie To Me: Super Polygraph Power!
House: Super Unorthodox Medicine Power!
Bones: Super Anatomy Knowledge Power!
Mentalist: Super Memory Power!
The Closer: Super Interrogation Power!
etc.

I would rather watch normal people doing extraordinary jobs.

People who make mistakes occasionally, and don't know everything about their given field.

nah, that's too easy.

He has another kid that she doesn't know about, or something. Even that seems too plausible.

It has to be something off-the-wall.... he's a hit-man for the mob, or he's under investigation for something and has to give depositions or something

^Yeah, and the girl only kissed him on the cheek...didn't seem like a hugely romantic gesture that they usually do in other shows to imitate an affair.

yeah, that was a good episode. Both plotlines were good. It's nice to see Lightman's personal feelings getting in the way of his investigation.

and it's also good to see him investigating his partner's husband. I agree it's not an affair. But I also don't think it's something as obvious as his secret daughter.
