I have am IBM thinkpad that I need to have fixed. It was bought in 2005 from the NCSU bookstore, but they told me it is out of warranty. When it's booting up the fan makes a loud noise then the screen says "fan error" and it cuts off. It quit working one night when I had a party and we were using it for a stereo. I don't know if somebody did something too it or if it coincidentally messed up that night. It was making some wierd noises for a few weeks prior to it breaking. Anybody have an idea what is wrong or know who to take it to? I am not a computer person and need help. Thanks 3/4/2009 6:53:25 PM |

i'd PM a moderator and ask him to move this to the Tech Talk forum, where one of the nerds there can direct you, if not fix it for you.

sounds like a dead fan, but if it overheated other components might be damaged.
i had good luck taking my computer to absoluteraleigh.com (its actually in cary) for a power jack repair. it was pretty sketch dropping the thing off, they just took my laptop and gave me their card, but i got it back in a reasonable amount of time in good shape. 3/4/2009 7:19:44 PM |

this should be pretty simple to fix.
either PM me, or, as suggested, PM fregac. 3/4/2009 9:22:29 PM |
