Anyone have any experience with the various (free) packages for this?

PayPal automation is a plus, direct credit card processing would be nice but not immediately necessary.

I am looking at FreeSide, but it doesn't seem to have native PayPal automation + the interfaces seem fairly busy.

What packages have you used, how stable were they, what issues did you run into?

kthx

i didn't know there were any open source packages that did this.

freeside looks pretty nice (although busy like you said, but that can be changed) and i doubt it would be very difficult to add in paypal processing.

i've only used phpCOIN. it's free, but not exactly open source, although you get the code... considering it's php and all...

it's nice, i'd go with it.

honestly, though, if i could do it all over again, i'd just write something myself that did exactly what i wanted it to. the automation isn't very complicated.

option #2: http://www.citrusdb.org/

this appears to offer some paypal integration and a cleaner (default) interface

I think I'm going with phpcoin, actually, since evan and another friend both recommended it + based on trials

summary of trials:

FreeSide:

Viable choice if you want to spend a lot of time restyling it. I didn't, so I did not investigate it any further.

CitrusDB:

It does not actually offer any PayPal integration, descriptions were misleading. Credit card processing is by export to CSV for external batch procesing only. It looks like a great option if you want a basic package to elaborate on and extend with your own batching. I am leaning towards re-implementing with CitrusDB at a later time after I get something working up.

phpcoin:

Something working. The interface is kind of clunky, but can be rethemed pretty easily. It makes a few assumptions about the kind of hosting one provides and will need to be slightly customized in pretty much any installation, but it's a very good approximation in most cases. They snuck some Google ads into the default homepage, I found that kind of amusing.
