Hi,

I'm in Wolf Village, and my 360 was failing the connection test at the MTU part. I just registered my 360 with Resnet. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

first result

i'm assuming you don't know what the MTU is, so
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_transmission_unit

essentially, there's a router upstream of your connection that has a MTU set lower than 1364 bytes. this is surprising, as ethernet networks usually employ a MTU of 1492 or 1500 bytes.

when i worked for resnet, wolf village was almost entirely on old ass 10mbps catalysts, not sure if that has changed or not... those are obviously not capable of doing MLS so it's irrelevant except for the fact that whole segment is comprised of old, outdated hardware.

in short: email resnet@ncsu.edu. plenty of people use xbox 360s on resnet, i remember seeing some in WV and seeing quite a few registered in CCA, so it's doable.

They upgraded across the blgds to 3560s in November/December Yay for 100mb now

Try for 1500 MTU. if it doesnt work, send me a PM and I can come look at it for ya. If you email resnet itll be monday or tuesday at the earliest before they get back to ya. Some of the staff is out, and normally its a 2-3 day turnaround on stuff like this anyway.

EDIT
Looking at the remedy(help desk tracker) posts, I see 2 in queue for Xbox issues at WV right now, over the past week. Not sure if one is yours but it doesnt sound isolated. Ill have to check mine or my roomies, see if they still work.

I love having Remedy access

Edit 2

As I forget (and yes im googleing) what a quick way to mod ping packet sizes? I wanna see how large they are allowing on the network right now.

In windows, ping -f -l 1000 to send a 1000-byte ping. the -f is needed for checking if it goes over the mtu as it sets 'dont fragment'

ya i got that. then had to look up how to do sweeps on a cisco router

its failing for 1500. 1365 which im seeing for xboxes passes but its only returning 56. 1024 returns 36. pinging google.

Im now also doing a ping sweep from my router, will report back in a bit on it (its gonna take a while). Im seeing already 2 zones its failed but its picked back up. havta wait and see what it reports.

Edit
Google is fragmenting them on return as noted above, did several other sites, they pass up to about 1400+ and then its busted somewhere on campus so this is weird...

hehehe. yup, still here.

everyone to date who has had mtu errors has either a)not registered their xbox or b)registered it incorrectly or c)not had it plugged in to a live network jack.

there's that whole 8/B 0/D problem...usually that's the cause of incorrect registrations.

can't do much without more info, actually. the port data for WV isn't updated in cyclone.

but i'd be curious to know if a computer works on that port, or if the xbox works on a known good port. that would rule out a vlan issue.

the registered mac looks a little off too but it might be right. oh well, we'll take care of it monday.

the entry switches were 10/100 so there may have been a couple of 100mbps ports scattered throughout the buildings, but with no rhyme or reason or intention.

If its like my living room, both ports are active. Im running a CS server on one, and a soho router for me and the roomies game systems on the other.

Remedy is great but I dont have CCA access
