all the other threads were dead, but you know the story. after a disappointing 17-10 regular season 4th place finish, not only did the wolfpack pull off a miracle finish to beat a very tough virginia team in the acc tournament, but they beat all the odds and pulled off arguably one of the biggest upsets in ncaa tournament history against the highly touted phi slamma jamma after beating the same virginia team by one point in the elite 8.

i found the 1983 nc state vs. pepperdine double overtime game in the first round and thought i'd share

Man watching that is so awesome. Despite all the criticism sid gets as our coach, it makes me feel better after watching that to know that our coach is someone who was a part of something so special. It seems like that should be all he needs to motivate players to achieve and win.

i didn't realize how ugly that pepperdine game was until watching it. we had so many comebacks in that game. it was cool to see sid doing a little coaching himself after he fouled out in the 1st overtime. here's a nice write up taking about the pepperdine game specifically.

Quote :
"The Wolfpack trailed by six with 24 seconds left in overtime and the Waves were at the free throw line when Harrick's dreams were crushed. Pepperdine had 89-percent free-throw shooters missing foul shots, missing one-and-one," In ensuing years, Harrick said he reminded Valvano every chance he got that Pepperdine was responsible for turning Valvano into a legend.

Jim Valvano told anyone who would listen that N.C. State's opening-round game against Pepperdine would not be easy.

What he failed to mention, however, was just how ugly this might be.

The ACC champion and sixth-seeded Wolfpack needed double-overtime for a 69-67 victory over the pesky, 11th-seeded Waves, which gave up a seemingly insurmountable lead in the first overtime.

Just as the Wolfpack couldn't hit field-goal attempts in the first half, the Waves couldn't hit free throws in overtime, and their misfires at the line were a life-saver for Valvano and his team in the sparsely filled Gill Coliseum on the campus of Oregon State.

In the first overtime, the Waves were celebrating a six-point lead with less than a minute to play and possession of the ball. In the second overtime, they jumped out to an early three-point lead, only to see the Wolfpack pull away with superior shooting from the line.

By the time the buzzer sounded, the Wolfpack had completed its fourth consecutive last-second or overtime victory, and the Waves sat shell-shocked at their misfortunes.

"I think you need to win a game like this if you expect to go far in the tournament," Valvano said. "You need a little luck if you want to go a long way."

The last thing the coach and his charges were thinking in the waning moments of regulation, the first overtime and the second overtime were advancing to Sunday's second-round game against Nevada-Las Vegas. They were simply trying to survive, much of that time with senior point guard Sidney Lowe on the bench after he committed his fifth foul.

Lowe went from coach-on-the-floor to another guy hoping on the bench after a desperation reach-in foul with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime, his brilliant career seemingly over.

That left the Wolfpack's fate in the hands of its other senior guard, Dereck Whittenburg, who for the second consecutive Saturday (given the late-night finish of the contest) excelled in overtime. Whittenburg hit eight of 10 free throw attempts in the second extra period, similar to his clutch performance last week against North Carolina in the second round of the ACC Tournament, when he scored 11 of his 15 points after regulation."

and then an article from espn 20 years later with cozell mcqueen talkin about signing an autograph for ric flair, lol http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney03/story?id=1525209

thanks for that video WolfAce. i didn't get to see that when it came on.

while i am certainly proud of our history and accomplishments, i'm flat out sick of remembering 1983 and all that. yea its awesome, but most of the people on this board were not even born. lets get a championship in our generation so that 25 years later i can remember somethign i was alive for.

and i disagree with ^^ about us being a laughing stock. we have the ability to beat any team on any given night and that does not qualify as a "laughing stock"

I've always thought the 2 shot after ten foul rule was lame. Bring back the one and one no matter the total number of fouls.

^yeah, i was looking for some more on google video, but all i could find was that espn classic tribute on that japanese host that takes so damn long to load.

if anybody does find some torrents or anything else please share. and this doesn't have to be all about the 83 team, if anybody has some good historical material (like maybe marko or Brass Monkey) please share that as well.

i think somebody seriously needs to make a movie about that 1983 team though. who would you choose to play jimmy v?

they'd probably get some up-and-comer to play the role of jimmy v. all the dynamic italian actors that would fit the part like pacino and garcia are way too old now.

i'm tryin to see what i can do to make this happen. i know a few folks i can talk to that are in the film industry i could possibly get the idea rolling with them. if anybody else has some connects, start putting the bug in their ear. to me, this could potentially be better than all those movies like glory road, remember the titans, facing the giants and dare i say hoosiers. sometimes we forget how good of a story it is because it's been a part of us for so long.

thurl bailey is a motivational speaker now because of this team.

I agree that we need to stop living in the past, but at least we have a past. No one can take that away from us. We can rise to the top again, we just need to believe that we can beat the UNC/DUKE Empires once again. Use the force Lowe.

The really sad part is that most of us here can't even remember 1983

If it was '93, then yeah it would still be one of our fondest child memories ( at least the ones here who grew up rooting for State before they came here )

but 1983 ? Thats like a fairy tale...might as well by 1953

I just live through my parents talking about it (staying up into the wee hours of the night watching the games because the first ones were all on the West Coast and broadcast late at night). Them talking about hearing people yelling up and down the street from inside their dens as every game went down to the last second.

Was also nice to hear the grandparents talk about going to the '74 Final Four.

I'm all like..."Well...I went to Columbus and saw us get beat by OSU in triple OT, then went to Tallahassee the same year saw us get beat in OT....and I also saw us beat a shitty Notre Dame in a bowl game."

That's all I got...

in all seriousness, why not?

hearing thurl talk about the woman who was talking about her husband being in a coma and having to choose whether or not to pull the plug or not, but chose to hold on because she saw something in every game state was playing really means something. i think we tend to forget how many people (many who weren't even sports fans) were touched by this team's drive to never give up hope. and who wouldn't like the exposure this would give us?

When I was in school in the 90's, they did some sort of movie about Valvano or something. I don't remember the details, but I remember my neighbor went to Reynold's to be an extra. There was a crowd shot in the movie where they took a small section of a crowd and duplicated it many times to look like a lot of people.

i see what you guys are going for there, but the thread is about remembering 1983, not forgetting about the present. this is not a thread for giving up, but rather for remembering our crazy run in the acct and ncaat.

there are enough threads here for complaining, don't ruin this one.

i bet if we had even won a championship 5 years ago, people on here would still complain. what's the point in winning a championship if it's not going to be worth anything to us years later. we have more history than most schools can even dream of, let's celebrate it. you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been.

by the way, 1 of the main reasons the players say they came to play here is because of our tradition & history
