Huzzah! The last Baltimore team I'm allowed to pull for since the Colts left and pulling for their replacement in the Ravens is verboten in my family!

Didn't the Orioles stop playing baseball after the 1996 season? I could have sworn they packed it up and quit.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/11514684/rss encouraging!
Quote : | " What's interesting is that even the Orioles veteran players seem willing to wait. What's interesting is how positive the feeling around the team has been, even though everyone seems to know that 2009 could be rough.
"I think we all feel we have some pretty good things coming up," said second baseman Brian Roberts, who this spring signed a four-year, $40 million contract extension to stay with the O's. "We haven't even had anything remotely like this since I've been here."
Roberts signed with the Orioles out of the 1999 draft. He's been in the big leagues with them since 2001, which means he's been on teams that have averaged 92 losses a year.
Aubrey Huff knows the feeling.
Huff played for Tampa Bay from 2000 through the middle of the 2006 season. He was part of teams that finished a combined 237 games under .500. After half a season with the 82-80 Astros, Huff signed with the Orioles, where he has played for two straight 93-loss teams.
"I was called baseball's biggest loser," Huff said.
Now he wants to stay with the Orioles, because he believes that this is where he's going to win. He tells people that the Orioles of 2009 are like the Rays team he left behind in 2006, a team that a year and a half later made it to the World Series.
"Obviously, there are a lot of comparisons with this team," Huff said. "It's the same exact thing that Tampa went through, and it would kill me if I left here and a year and a half later they were in the World Series."
The excitement comes from seeing Wieters, a switch-hitting catcher who manager Dave Trembley describes as "Joe Mauer, but with more power."
It comes from seeing Tillman, a right-hander who won't turn 21 until April 15, but already has the stuff and the mound presence to look like a major league pitcher. It comes from Arrieta, who is two years older than Tillman but looks a little less polished. And it comes from Matusz, the Orioles' top draft pick in 2008 (and the fourth pick overall). " |
Quote : | "Breakout ... Matt Wieters: Rarely does a publication tout a rookie as a "breakout," especially when he plays the extra-demanding catcher position, but rarely does a player come along so gifted that he dominates in his first try at every level in the minor-league system. Yes, dominates. In his first -- yes, first -- professional season last year, Wieters, the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft, ranked fifth among all minor-league players with a .355 batting average, third with a .454 on-base percentage, 10th with a .600 slugging percentage and third with a 1.053 OPS. He went all the way up to Double-A and actually improved, hitting .365 with 12 home runs and a 1.085 OPS in 208 at-bats. He even walks more than he strikes out at age 22. The possibility of him opening the year in the minors means you might get him after the 15th round. Even better." |

MASN has the rights to the game but fucking Time Warner doesn't carry that channel.

TWC has lost like 3 arbitration cases requiring them to carry MASN, and they still keep fighting it. i don't know how they keep getting away with it.4/6/2009 10:16:52 PM |

yeah i'll post what i think is the synopsis tot he whole masn thing from the other thread in here for fun.... although i think most people in here already know the deal
Quote : | "yup
we're now in year 3 of TWC vs MASN/MLB blackout in parts of NC
from what i understand:
TWC only wants to carry it if they can charge for it on a sports tier, MASN/MLB want it on regular cable
judges have ordered TWC on separate occasions to carry MASN, but thanks to the court of appeals system, TWC has been able to leave it off the lineup
it's my understanding that you can't even watch O's in Extra Innings (which carries "all" the games)
i'm not sure, but it feels like once in a while there's an O's game on one of those HD "special events" channels, but it's pretty infrequent... so infrequent i never bother looking
a bonus to share the pain is that any time AL East teams like the yanks or the bosox play the o's you've either gotta find it on the internet or you can be one of those Direct TV people who get all excited when things like this happen...
(in the end, all television providers blow, so it's just a matter of tradeoffs)" |
