If all you have is a shower stall it best be nice. Master bathrooms, aside from being en suite, should have some sort of feature that makes it stand out. If you have a shower stall that reminds you of the gym it needs help.

Nice, big shower that's easy to step into.

It's good for older folks who have a hard time getting in and out of a traditional tub.

When we built our house, we chose nice large shower over any sort of tub/shower or garden tub/ stall combo. Our shower is large enough to fit multiple people, any sort of shower furniture (like a teak bench), or a child's tub/seat. My husband and I enjoy showers together and I also like to bring Silas into the shower in his little tub while I shower. It has been fantastic. We just made sure that our second bathroom has a bath tub.

we have both and our jacuzzi tub has been used about 5x by both of us since we bought our place 2 years ago - if it's an option just go with a large shower but both def. do help appearances - people like the idea of baths

I'll tell you what... I've used my bathtub more than my wife has. Yes, I used bubble bath stuff purchased from Origins. Yes, I'm secure enough in my manhood to take bubble baths.

If you don't have a tub AND a showerhead, a toilet, and a vanity, it is technically not a full bath

Sink, toilet, shower, tub -- full bath
Sink, toilet, shower -- 3/4 bath
Sink, toilet, tub -- 3/4 bath
Sink, toilet -- 1/2 bath

If you are running low on space, it is better to have the shower in the tub with a nice glass door or something than not to have the tub at all.

yeah, in our master bath, we have a jacuzzi tub and a stall shower.
We've been here two years and have used the tub...... zero times.

I was considering a remodel option of taking out the tub and making a large, two-head walk-in shower, but..... never got around to it.

i know i take bubble baths too. they're so amazing. for ME, no bath would definitely be an issue. i mean super nice showers CAN make up for it...like double headed showers and stuff. but i really, really enjoy baths.

I don't really get the idea of jacuzzi's or whatever. My parents had one in our house when we were growing up in Cary... the only people to ever use it was me and my siblings when we were very young kids because we thought it was fun to have the luxury of an indoor "jacuzzi" (it wasn't even hardly big enough for two 7 year olds).

Is it really just for show though?

edit: and I know my dad put it in the floor plan simply for resale value... I guess my question is, WHY does it make a house more resellable... simply because one house at 300k vs another with a jacuzzi at 300k?

yeah my parents have jucuzzi and have used it like 5x, but my nieces use it every night. I think they are the best way to clean kids - thow in bubble bath, water, and kids - mix - profit.

the money spender in me says "why not have both" like everyone else here, but if you have to choose, go with bathtub and get a shower head installed if it doesn't have one. Just a shower stall I imagine will not be worth as much resale wise

You definitely need the tub. We have a garden tub and a shower, but I'd loooove to take out the tub and make a giant walk in shower instead. Only thing using the garden tub is the cat's litter box. But, we know we're not staying in the house forever and it'd majorly hurt resale.

good idea in theory, but i take hot ass showers and the steam would royally fuck up the tv.
I stayed at a hotel in vegas (flamingo) that had a TV imbedded in the mirror that was fucking badass. surround sound and everything in the damn bathroom. that's the shit.

How is that disgusting? We have a kickass step in litterbox, and my wife keeps that thing spotless. Having it in the bathtub keeps the litter kicking to a minimum. Most people I know keep their litter boxes in the bathroom anyway. We bleach out the tub once a month and will probably resurface it before we move.

Pressurized steam. Kills all the nasty crap that grows in showers. Right now I'm trying to decide what size unit I should get. I wish consumer reports had tested them so I could see what units have the highest PSI at the nozzle.

Steam is chemical free, and you can use the same unit to remove wallpaper. Try that with bleach.

Growing up, I rarely used the jacuzzi function of my tub. I still liked to soak. I mean, there's nothing better than relaxing with some Disney-themed bubble bath and a cigarette after a long hard day of high school. But the size and depth of the tub is more important than how many jets it has or whatever.

If you're pressed for space, there are lots of cool ways to combine the tub and shower. I used a shower like FykalJpn posted, and I really enjoyed the experience. You can also install the shower head in the ceiling centered over the tub, which looks cool (but I don't know how well it works).

If your tub is large enough, you can just do the tub and a shower head--no curtain or door or anything. I like this the most, but a lot of people prefer something to enclose the space and keep the steam and heat in. But you can have a walk-in shower in another bath if you really wanna steam it up.

Master Bath and Kitchen are two largest items which affect resale value. Given enough space, go for both. If you can find / purchase Better Homes and Garden "Home Designer Suite 8", and have dimensions of your house, does a good job allowing you to drag/drop different things. See below:

If I were building a house, I'd want to do a Japanese style bathroom.



Bathtub with a washing area next to it. Wash your nasty self outside of the tub, then sit in the tub for a nice, clean soak. The tubs are nice and deep too unlike standard American tubs.

The toilet and the sink are outside of the bathing room.

i didn't read the thread, but i think that a bath tub is pointless unless it's big enough to comfortably hold 2 people (seriously)...the only thing i use mine for is washing the dog
