So I've wanted one of these things since 2003. Bare bones, no thrills, just shit it and get it performance.
Quote : | "The RS gives up all comfort and civility in the name of saving weight, denting the dirt with 234 fewer pounds than the standard Evo. Of course, eliminating keyless entry, a CD player, and the power goodies doesn't shed enough weight to make a performance point, so the RS must also leave the factory without the standard model's sound-deadening material, trunk lining, anti-lock brake system, rear wing, rear-window wiper, high-intensity-discharge headlamps, and just about every interior practicality, including the vanity mirrors, rear assist grips, and map lights. Even the door handles and side mirrors lack the weight of paint. Our tester was without an air conditioner as well." |
-from C&D
As for actually seeing one in real life, the closest was a for sale ad in carmax back in 2006ish, and it was in new mexico. They seem to be quite an elusive piece of equipment. I wanted that thing with a passion.... still do.
Has anyone seen one, either in person or for sale?

I ran across a few RS models back when I was Evo shopping a couple of years ago. A regular Evo is already pretty crude, I guess going that extra step isn't a big deal, except that I'd really want ABS, AC, and a stereo. You can option the latter two back in (or just add an aftermarket stereo). I don't know about ABS, though. Also, the regular Evo bodywork is functional, although overstated.
You might also have a tough time reselling it.
and yeah, you don't see that many of them. I kicked around the idea, but the few I saw were, at least at the time, not significantly enough less expensive to make it worthwhile.

You are right though. The stock lancer trunk has about 30 more lines then the stock evo trunk.
I think I could make an evo trunk lid in my garage.

it's more capable in a straight line, but less so overall. with it being significantly more crude than even a regular Evo (which itself is wickedly unrefined), I would only buy one if I got it for a killer deal, and if it had AC optioned back in (unless I lived in the Pacific NW or somewhere). 3/17/2009 11:28:09 PM |

that was one of my gripes against it until i drove one...i figured that it would feel like an econobox with a decent bit of power that managed to generate good #s. That couldn't be further from the truth. It also doesn't feel like a 3200 lb car with awful weight distribution (my other gripe, until I drove one.) It feels like an absolute thoroughbred performance car. I drove a C6 Z51, then jumped back into my Evo. The 'Vette felt very clumsy, heavy, and large in comparison (although I still love the C6). About the worst thing I can say about the Evo's driving character is that it can feel kind of frantic, like it had way too much caffeine (but I personally like that).
It does have a nasty, plasticky interior and some cheap feeling controls and switches, and lack of features such as cruise control or power seats that you'd kind of expect in a $35k car.

Evo-RS models were brought to dealerships mostly on special order I think.
You'd be best served looking in motorsport magazines for them.

I'd be scared to buy a used RS. You know the only reason a person would buy that car would be to drive the wheels off of it, and they aren't the most solidly built cars to begin with. The dashes on them got rattling vibrations straight from the factory.
I'd rather take my chances buying a standard evo and gutting it myself. 3/18/2009 8:39:38 PM |

^^ yeah, but that's pretty much the case with almost all Evos. I mean, there's no other reason to own it....and yeah, it's gonna have interior rattles, but even if you buy it new, if it doesn't rattle when you pull off the lot, it will within a matter of months. Also, yeah, the previous owner probably drove the wheels off of it, but what exactly do you plan on doing to it yourself? I figure that 95% of Evos are beaten to within an inch of their lives almost every time they are driven. I don't know that it makes a lot of difference who did it.
I'd prefer one that hadn't been dragged raced or launched a lot. that's about it. 3/18/2009 9:41:20 PM |

oh, no doubt a better car overall.
But, you know, the Evo is kind of a hired gun. If you want better overall, get a 3-series. I'd personally rather have the rawer, hard-core IX (and its insane ability to make huge power for almost no money in modification). 3/19/2009 8:20:52 PM |

I actually like the look of the X.
The trunk has lines.
The tail lights are blended into the trunk.
The front fenders line actually carries into the front doors.
The wing is , ok its still crazy, less crazy.
The side mirrors arent as boxy.
I think it was a big improvement. I dont see many on the road though. 3/20/2009 8:11:20 AM |

^^ I like the looks of the X ok, i guess, except for the nose. It's AWFUL. I prefer the sharper lines of the IX, though. It looks leaner and harder (which it is), rather than bloated and soft. That said, the IX's looks have grown on me a lot, but it still isn't what I'd call a beautiful car or great exercise in automotive styling. The selling point of that car is the drive--that, and being the most badass sedan on the road, if 4-doors, a real backseat, and useful trunk are things on your list. 3/20/2009 9:56:03 AM |
SandSanta All American 22435 Posts user info edit post |
The M3, AMG C64, RS4, and CTS-V would highly disagree with your 'most badass sedan on the road' statement. 3/20/2009 10:34:59 AM |
theDuke866 All American 52839 Posts user info edit post |
Forgot about the new M3 sedan and CTS-V, although I should qualify that it'll take $1000-1500 and a few hours doing bolt-ons to uncork the IX's horsepower. It'll run 11s very easily, which puts it right back in the hunt with those big gun flagship sedans. I also will wager that it will outhandle any of them.
(of course, the CTS-V would probably be easy to get INSANE power out of if stock wasn't enough for you).
but i guess I should've chosen better wording--the Evo IX is probably the best track car/backroad toy on the road in terms of 4-door sedans. 3/20/2009 10:52:06 AM |

Yep. Interior is complete ass, and I'm still leery of the build quality (my clutch died at just over 20k, which is pretty normal from what i've gathered, and it developed a weird shudder in the steering wheel that only happened in certain circumstances, but neither I nor the dealer could ever figure out...again, at only a little over 20k miles. Also, it rattled like a spraypaint can).
Still, what a helluva fun car to drive. I'd think about getting another one, but the IXs still cost way more than I want to spend at the moment, and the VIIIs cost more than I'm going to spend for a 5-6 year old car that I have some reservations about. If I could find a nice VIII with about 60k miles for maybe $12k or so, I'd likely get it.
