I drove through there a few weeks ago.
I was actually impressed with the skyline and city as seen from 95. But why can't you number your exits like the rest of the country? 3/12/2009 10:46:41 PM |
tkcrowshaw All American 9437 Posts user info edit post |
most of the country numbers its exits in order...its only down south where exits are determined by miles...bc there arent that many....up here youd have 5 exit 23's in providence.....its actually a great town....there are 279 bars here and prov being tiny that means that prov has the most bars per square mile of any city in the country, its known as the porn capital of the the northeast, prostitution is legal as long as you are behind closed doors, i mean...its not all that bad 3/13/2009 2:08:23 AM |

Actually, you got it turned around. It's only the Northeast that does sequential numbering. The rest of the country does numbering by mileage with one or two odd exceptions (California for example doesn't even post the exit numbers on their signs).
I liked Providence; I used to go there regularly when she was at RISD, and I lived up in Western Mass. The whole Firewalk thing is cool in the summer. However, outside that one area downtown, most of the city looks a bit... well... rough.3/13/2009 3:22:08 PM |

OR SO I HEARD 3/13/2009 11:16:53 PM |
tkcrowshaw All American 9437 Posts user info edit post |
no we have a 5'4 jewish guy as mayor now....the state is moving the highway through downtown to just outside of downtown....opening up 44 acres of downtown waterfront space for development.....i reallly hope this city doesnt fuck it up.
and look knock on ri all ya want, i used to as well, but theres something about this place, its addictive, theres always something to do...1 hour from boston 2 from nyc, decent casinos 45 min away, beaches, mountains close by, newport is absolutely amazing, the culture here is great with brown and risd and many of the other great groups that call pvd home. it may be small in size but prov and ri are a great place. id highly suggest visiting here for a weekend....it would definately change your mind 3/14/2009 4:14:45 AM |

you can get over when people are posting seattle/LA/philly/NYC

providence has more to offer than 98% of the cities in north carolina
I'd say Charlotte and the Wilmington metro are the only cities the def have more to offer 3/15/2009 4:26:09 PM |

Similar to Boston. Since its close to the ocean though, I've found it milder than inland cities like Hartford or Albany. Still rough if you've never experienced a New England winter or something similar.
Agreed that Newport is really neat. 3/18/2009 11:25:53 AM |

yeah...Newport is expensive (especially during the summer...during the winter it's much more manageable). It's very much like Annapolis, MD if you've ever been there. 3/18/2009 5:53:18 PM |

Quote : | "PROVIDENCE — No one seems to be getting worked up about a bill before the General Assembly that would decriminalize possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, making it a civil violation punishable by fine rather than jail time.
At a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, only three people — a former New Jersey police detective, a spokesman for a convict assistance agency and a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union — testified about the bill. All were in favor of it.
No one from the attorney general’s office, the governor’s office or any other state agency appeared to oppose it. Nor was there anyone from the state’s law enforcement agencies to speak a negative word.
Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for Governor Carcieri, said it would be premature for the governor to comment on a bill that has not been voted on by either the House or the Senate, since it could change in any number of ways during that process. If it’s approved, she said, the governor would take a position on the bill as passed. The state Health Department, which had opposed last year’s medical marijuana bill, had no position and the state’s drug court officials declined to comment as well.
Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch’s spokesman, Michael Healey, said with literally hundreds and hundreds of bills introduced each session, Lynch had to pick the ones that most closely affected his office’s operations or legislative priorities. He said the marijuana decriminalization bill was not one of them. Healey added Lynch had supported the medical marijuana law.
Pawtucket Police Chief George L. Kelley III, president of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association, also declined to comment, either personally or on his organization’s behalf, saying the bill “is not on our radar.”
The Assembly last year overrode a Carcieri veto to legalize marijuana for medical uses. A new bill sponsored by Sen. Leo R. Blais, R-Coventry, would not make possession of an ounce or less of marijuana legal, but it would reduce penalty for such possession from up to a year of jail time to a civil violation with a maximum $100 fine and forfeiture of the marijuana. The laws concerning possession with intent to sell would not be changed.
Sen. Charles J. Levesque, D-Portsmouth, vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he thought that with the state facing such a difficult time with its budget, fiscal issues might shunt the Blais bill aside, at least this year.
Blais said he thought his bill had a 60-percent chance of passing this session. He attributed the lack of vocal opposition to last year’s passage of the medical marijuana law, saying it showed support for easing the penalties concerning a small amount of the drug.
“We approved medical marijuana,” Blais said. “That was the fight. That horse is already out of the barn and in the next field.” " |
