Get a good doctor, you'll have lung cancer before you know it.

when i moved to california, i had a really tough time because i met this really cool chick, but her ex boyfriend was a royal dick. turns out he knew karate, and i would routinely get my ass handed to me by him and his karate jock friends. luckily for me, the maintenance guy at our apartment community was an older asian man who knew karate. he took me under his wing, taught me karate, and helped me with the bullies. i was finally accepted after defeating the dick ex boyfriend of my new girlfriend, and we lived happily ever after until she messed up my car and i went to Okinawa, and got into more adventures. I eventually came back to california and did some stuff involving a small tree.

Yeah, I actually live and work in Santa Monica, but I'm not kidding myself about the air being that much better.

It's still nice working a block from the beach and skipping out early on Fridays to play volleyball, though.

I'm sorry you have to live there.

i spent some time there a few years back. I do not understand why some people are in love with this shithole.

If you live on the Westside of LA (SM, Brentwood, MDR, Palisades, parts of Venice) it is fucking amazing. I was born and raised there. You cannot beat the weather 365. And there arent too many other places where you can snowboard and surf in the same day. Anything East of the 405 is generally shit as far as I'm concerned though. The local spots tend to have a lot nicer and more laid back people than the typical Hollywood bullshit. Basically, there are two LA's....us and them. Us being the locals and those who came here to live and appreciate the local lifestyle....and them...the people in "the biz" who fuck everything up with their lattes, pocket dogs and faux-chic.

I grew up in what is now Spring Forest, back when it was El Toro.
My relatives live in Glendale. I'm out there visiting twice a year.
I'll be out there for a week in June.

I'm no meteorologist, but it seems like it only thinks about raining here when nearby areas have been on fire long enough to generate enough particulate matter for the humidity to accumulate and start a bit of a hazy mist.

welcome to southern california -- winter is the only time there's even a possibility of rain, otherwise we live in a desert

do you like beer? i've found a few good beer bars out in santa monica (one is also a whisky bar, if that's more your thing)...

i really really miss being by the ocean but not at the expense of a brutal commute across town compared to my current 0.75mi walk, driving in LA is miserable

Yeah, for a good beer selection, I go to the Library Alehouse once in a while. Barney's on the promenade doesn't have as big a variety, but they have some good ones, and I get a 25% discount from my workplace, so I end up there with colleagues a good bit.

What's the whiskey bar? I'd be up for that.

Not particularly. The Santa Monica and Venice area is nice, and I enjoy being able to bike to work every day, but I'm not a big fan of the greater LA area so far. I've only been here since September though and am generally too busy to see the city except for one or two weekends a month, so my opinion shouldn't carry too much weight. There is a lot going on and a lot of great cultural opportunities, but I just don't like the vibe of the city as much as some other big cities. I haven't been here long enough to put my finger on the exact reasons why, but the traffic and the pollution are probably two of them.

yeah, i like the beer at the library alehouse (the food was pretty good too)

the other place is called the daily pint - it's a little inland off pico blvd, it's a bit dive-y but they have good beer and a ridiculous number of whisky bottles (not a whisky drinker myself, so i can only assume it's a decent selection)

I lived there for years and went to UCLA. I just went back and now that I have a wife and kid, I wouldn't move back.

I used to chill at Sonny McClean's on 26th and Wilshire almost every day, good place to visit if you are from New England.

It's smack in the middle of Belair, Brentwood, and Beverly Hills. Sunset Blvd. borders the North part of campus. I've been to dozens of college campuses and it is the coolest and nicest area by far.

The school is top 3 among public universities nationwide and the UCLA name is acclaimed worldwide.

In the years that I was there I had a class with Winnie from the Wonder Years, the Green Goblin guy from all the Spiderman movies, had two classes taught by Jared Diamond who has his own show and was a Pulitzer winner, etc.

On the first day of some summer class in '04, the teacher called roll and suddenly bowed down and did the "We're not worthy" thing. He announced the name of a girl who had just one a gold medal in track in the Olympics the week before. I shared a room with the guitarist Zach from One Republic for two months and used to give him quarters so he could buy Macaroni and Cheese, now he's a millionaire.

It's a cool school to visit and you could just walk around campus for a bit to get a feel for it. They film movies there in the Summer all the time. There's always something going on.

Hey roberta, thanks for encouraging me to check out the Daily Pint. That's going to be my new hangout, especially since it's less than a mile away. But I found their listing of scotches, and it's really damn impressive for what otherwise looks like a fairly dive-y bar:

http://thedailypint.net/uisge-beatha/single-malt-scotch/

I'm in the market for a good "special occasion" bottle of scotch, so I'm going to be trying a number of those to see what I should pick.

I lived about 1.5 miles from there at 26th and Wilshire, right behind Sonny McCleans.

cool, i'm glad you like it -- i haven't been there in awhile, you're lucky to be so close

sd2nc, i have a ucla question -- how do all the students get out to the rose bowl during football season? i guess i may learn this in a few months, but it's so damn far from campus... do they run shuttles out there or something?

I just arrived in Irvine for a work assignment, will be here until December. I only know one person out here, my manager, but he's pretty cool.

In the spirit of keeping rivalries going I have to jump in here and say LA is hella lame. And stop stealing our water.

Haha, I live down here but I'm on a project right now for a water agency in northern California, advising them on how to hedge against future uncertainties. I might be the wolf in sheep's clothing... "oh, don't worry, you've got plenty of water, OM NOM NOM NOM"

I just moved here, I'm just inside the border of Santa Monica and LA proper, about a block off Centinela.
