looks purely cosmetic, but I always see "lids" mentioned as performance mods.

lids actually make a noticeable difference on lsx f-bodies, especially at speed. as has been said, it's just a modification to the intake. as far as i know, the term lid isn't used for any other vehicle but 98-02 f-bodies.
