I could see some entertainment by walking around campus/brickyard and jamming the shit out of people on their cell phones, or driving around with a friend and filming the reactions of cell phone drivers as their phone cuts out.

I wouldn't support jamming people that are out there just walking around. I would support incorporating this into a car horn, where you jam someone's signal when they are talking on the phone while driving 5 under the posted speed limit on the beltline.

Yes, anything to make them remove the phone from their ear and stare at their screen to see if the call died and how many bars they have is sure to make a better road going experience for you.

These things are fun. Take one to a redneck ass firefighter meeting and turn it on and off a few times. Every nextel in the place beeping every 30 seconds will piss everyone off pretty quickly

^^^^It's not about making a better driving experience for me. It's about inconveniencing them as much as they have inconvenienced me. Plus they'll eventually give up and get back to driving, so added bonus.

Exactly.
Jamming drivers' phones would be much more dangerous than their cell-phone driving in the first place.

Me either. That is immoral and illegal.
You guys should be ashamed for even considering this.

Quote :
"In the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and many other countries, blocking cell-phone services (as well as any other electronic transmissions) is against the law. In the United States, cell-phone jamming is covered under the Communications Act of 1934, which prohibits people from "willfully or maliciously interfering with the radio communications of any station licensed or authorized" to operate. In fact, the "manufacture, importation, sale or offer for sale, including advertising, of devices designed to block or jam wireless transmissions is prohibited" as well.

Jamming is seen as property theft, because a private company has purchased the rights to the radio spectrum, and jamming the spectrum is akin to stealing the property the company has purchased. It also represents a safety hazard because jamming blocks all calls in the area, not just the annoying ones. Jamming a signal could block the call of a babysitter frantically trying to contact a parent or a someone trying to call for an ambulance.

The Federal Communications Commission is charged with enforcing jamming laws. However, the agency has not yet prosecuted anyone for cell-phone jamming. Under the U.S. rules, fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year, and the device used may also be seized and forfeited to the government."

That'll be $11,000 please, or would you rather take the year in jail?

Quote :

That's vigilantism and clearly wrong.

Give up what? Repeatedly dialing the number, seeing if it works, hitting send again, looking to see if it works WHILE THEY'RE DRIVING? LISTEN Y0U DUMB SHITSTAIN -- JAMMING THE PHONE OF SOMEONE WHILE THEY'RE TALKING WHILE DRIVING IS INESCAPABLY MORE DANGEROUS THAN THEM SIMPLY TALKING ON THEIR PHONE WHILE DRIVING IN THE FIRST PLACE. YOU ARE WRONG AND AN IDIOT. DOING THIS WOULD NOT ONLY BE ILLEGAL AND IMMORAL, BUT COMPLETELY RECKLESS. STFU.

You're right. I wouldn't jam a driver's cellphone. Strike that. I would however follow Willy Nilly around and jam his signal. And if a driver wants to continue a fruitless effort of trying to dial for 10+ minutes straight then perhaps they are the idiot. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results and all that.

Lighten up dude. You're blood pressure will thank you.

this sounds like a humongous dick move.

might not be too bad on campus, but then again, I don't know. I don't know how important the business is of a college kid.

But just people driving would kind of suck. Personally I have to dial in and talk on a lot of telecons. with my bluetooth while driving. That would be a pretty big hassle to stop driving, dial back in with my credentials, and start driving again.

seriously.

also, the fcc couldn't care less about this sort of thing unless you're doing it on a large scale. did you not see the part about "the agency has not yet prosecuted anyone for cell-phone jamming"?

it's just not worth their time nor the resources to go find you.

it's also somewhat difficult to triangulate a device like that, as you likely wouldn't have it on all the time.

not to hijack this thread, but I think it's ridiculous when people equate the speed limit to the "posted speed" - who the fuck cares if someone's tooling along at 55, as long as he/she in the right lane? I'm more annoyed with the jackasses talking on their phones while driving 5-10 mph over the "posted speed" and weaving in and out of traffic.

it looks like Nextel is one of the few providers that would not be affected

Highways are posted at speeds 5-10 mph lower than what they are designed for.

They are designed for the worst drivers in the worst cars too.

True. Not going to help you one bit when you get pulled over, but true, the system rather has to be designed to the lowest common denominator. If you take a system like the Autobahn in Germany, the LCD is much higher--it's harder and more expensive to get a driver's license, yearly inspections are more stringent, etc. Nice, but to make that work, you gotta have good public transit because in doing so you're going to price a lot of people out of a)holding a license and/or b)owning a car. Since our public transit blows, this is what we're stuck with.
