A lesson for those who might be confused....

Two Lanes:
-right: speed limit or below
-left: above speed limit or passing

Three Lanes:
-right: below speed limit
-middle: speed limit
-left: above speed limit or passing

Four lanes or more:
-right: below speed limit
-middle lanes: speed limit or close, with slower traffic keeping more right
-left: above speed limit or passing

Virginia Statute 209.20.1(b) -

1. When driving on a 4 lane highway, and there is a car with Virginia plates driving at or below the speed limit in the righthand lane, another Virginia driver is required to pull beside said vehicle in the lefthand lane and decelerate to equal his speed, thus ensuring both cars are side by side, allowing no traffic from behind to pass in the lefthand lane.

2. Both drivers are required by law to remain in this position for equal to or greater than ten (10) miles.

Correction: The left lane is for passing ONLY. No matter how fast you're going, it's not an excuse to camp out in the left hand lane. You should be actively passing cars, about to pass one, or just have passed one. Then get the fuck right. The only time staying in the left lane is acceptable is if the lanes to the right are full, making it impossible or dangerous to get over (which does happen some times, like I-40 at morning and evening rush hours).

What speed you're going is not directly related to what lane you should be in.

Basically, no matter how many lanes there are, and regardless of how fast or slow either you or surrounding traffic are going, you should stay as far right as you can, and move left as necessary to pass.

There's no rule of thumb of "if you're going "x" over the speed limit, you can/should be in "y" lane. You should always be in the right lane unless you're in the act of passing someone. Conversely, it's fine to be in the left lane even if you aren't speeding, as long as it's just long enough to pass someone going slower.

If there is no sign saying SLOW TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT. Then slow traffic can drive in whatever lane they want. I'm not saying they should, but they are allowed to.

You can drive below the speed limit on the highway in good weather if you want. I've done it, towing a large trailer in certain areas. There are certainly times when it is called for.

That is ridiculous. That's like saying "if there's no sign saying you can't litter, you can do it, even if you shouldn't." You shouldn't need a sign to tell you, and you shouldn't expect a sign to posted to guide your every action.


Also, I don't tailgate people on 2-lane roads or in the right lane of a multilane road no matter how slow they are. However, I will tailgate you mercilessly, cut you off, or do whatever else I need to do if you're in the way in the left lane.

The NCDOT and most other DOTs do this though. You'll notice that before an exit, they post that you're approaching the exit at least 3 times.

A box truck, 3 sedans, and a jeep are on an entrance ramp. A tractor-trailer merges into the left lane to allow traffic entrance onto the highway. A box truck and 3 sedans enter the highway. The tractor-trailer quickly merges right, the jeep is going 70MPH on the grass. I was driving the jeep. I'm not exactly sure where I went wrong, but when you're in the grass, something went wrong. Lets see, I signaled and had my headlights on (morning).

I've also been tailgated by a tractor-trailer right on my bumper in dense traffic for many miles and was essentially stuck because the person in front of me was going the same speed as the person beside them in the right and and made no effort to pass. I hate US 64.

I have no problem staying in the left lane if traffic is moderate and I'm going 10+ MPH over the speed limit. But the second anyone decides they wanna go faster than me in the left lane and are looking to pass me I will get over to the right ASAP. You shouldn't be the one to dictate how fast another driver decides to go.. that's not your call.

The problem comes when people drive in only the left lane going ~5 over and then pay no attention whatsoever to their rear view mirror. After 5 miles of being right behind them they finally realize they should get over

HAHA, just yelled at someone yesterday for this. Was driving through DC on 495 where most of the on-ramps are on the left side (where I'm cruising in a 15 man van at around 20 over.) DO NOT try to merge in front of me at 45 mph when I'm pushin' 75. I can come down to 60 or so, but no lower.

this is always so annoying. why can't it just be 4 lanes, in order of speed, left to right. if you are slow as fuck, stay in the far right lane not the right left lane. there are 4 lanes for a reason, people.

If you're getting off on an exit, get over before the exit is in pissing distance.
This eliminates like >80% dense traffic.


The rules of the road are there so that you don't ever get in anyone else's way. Likewise no one should be in yours.

If you're uncomfortable driving in the rain, I suggest that you slow down to a speed that you are comfortable with (so long as you keep to the right), rather than slamming on your brakes every 100 yards. Triangle area drivers have a real issue with this.

and my biggest pet peeve is turn signals. i'm not a GD mind reader and when you cut me off, it really, really, really, really, REALLY pisses me the fuck off. so you can expect me to cut you off and slam on my brakes (because i saw a squirrel, or because the car in front of me totally braked) in hopes that you rear end me and suck my big fat dick when you are at fault.
