2018 - Lost in first round to a 16 seed
2019 - Won it all
2020 - Covid, no tournament
2021 - Lost in first round to 13 seed
2022 - NIT
2023 - Lost in first round to 13 seed
2024 - Lost in first four play in to a 10 seed.

Winning a title makes it all worth it. But damn.

Bennett can win, obviously. That 2019 title team (and the 2018 team that lost to UMBC) were pretty loaded. Deandre Hunter, Kyle Guy, Diakite, Ty Jerome, Jay Huff have all spent time in the NBA.

But they’re just devoid of good players right now. Beekman is good but that’s about it.

For a team that's been as consistently good as UVA, their recruiting since their championship has been almost atrocious. Not surprising though as why would the best players want to go to a system that does not allow them to showcase their offense? Being the slowest tempo team in the country definitely affects their ability to recruit elite players, no matter how much UVA fans disagree.

Low scoring mostly bc of their tempo but they have had good defenses in the past. Arguments could be made about whether there brand of defense is fair (play very physical and dare the refs to call fouls) but it has been successful in the past. Granted championship year they had nba talent defenders, talent can make any system look good.


Looks like virgins was top 20 in defensive points per possession this year. And dead last in all of ncaa for possessions per game

^^on offense they play really slow, like take a bunch of shot clock. This limits the total possessions in the game. Then their defense happens to usually be pretty good too, so other teams have to take time to get shots. Being down vs Virginia can be tough nc they slow the game down so much, if you're down 10 you might need 10 possessions to catch up, with other teams that could maybe be 2-4 min of game time whereas with Virginia maybe more like 4-6 min, so games can be over earlier. Conversely bc Virginia is designed to slow it down on offense, when they get down in a game they aren't really built to speed it up when they need to. So when they try their already mediocre offensive efficiency goes down and deficits can get big quick.
